Now it's evolving into a full-length feature with the writers of Paddington in Peru - and yes, it’s officially copyrighted. That last part? Not easy. But with help from Lisa Oratz and Perkins Coie, we went through our process on a recent panel: human authorship can shine through AI. In the world of AI filmmaking, where shots, styles, and performances can be generated on demand, the creative power shifts to those who assemble meaning: 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙚𝙙𝙞𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙨. And I’m not just saying this because I came up as an editor, but the very roots of cinematic language come from the edit bay! The Russians (my people) gave us some of the first principles of editing: 1. 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙆𝙪𝙡𝙚𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙫 𝙀𝙛𝙛𝙚𝙘𝙩, proving that meaning is created not just by images, but by how they’re juxtaposed. 2. 𝙈𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙖𝙜𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙤𝙧𝙮 - editing to provoke emotional & intellectual responses (Eisenstein’s 𝘽𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙡𝙚𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙥 𝙋𝙤𝙩𝙚𝙢𝙠𝙞𝙣) Today’s AI workflows feel less like traditional directing and more like crafting title sequences (something I also came up doing): you’re curating, composing, remixing, and emotionally guiding. We brought The Mermaids to life. Then we told their story at Cannes. 🧜♀️⚓️🎥 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗱𝘀: 𝗔 𝗩𝗶𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻 𝗩𝗼𝘆𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗲 is an AI-generated cinematic story that brings the four mermaids (Scarlet, Valiant, Brilliant, and Resilient - that represent each ship in the Virgin fleet) to life in a way that blended mythology, modernity, and machine learning. From archetype to animation, it was a journey powered by tech but grounded in emotion. 🚢 We premiered the piece in collaboration with Virgin Voyages 🧠 We spoke about the process at Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity 💡 And most importantly - it still took a full crew to make it happen.
