“It’s incredibly challenging to write this recommendation for Josh. I have nothing but wonderful things to say, but saying them also reminds me that he’s no longer my boss. This is an AGONIZING reality to grapple with. When Josh announced his departure from Skookum, it reminded me of how upset I was when Dumbledore died in the Harry Potter books. I feel very lucky to have had such a nurturing boss for my first job in software, especially considering the size of our organization. There are a million ways to say this, but at his core, Josh Miller _cares_ and this is clear in everything he does. Maybe that’s why he left us to go work at a place called Carewell. He cares about his people, he cares about improving things, he cares about making the world a better place, etc. It sounds cheesy but it’s Actually True™. He makes you feel safe to be honest with him whether the conversation is easy or difficult. He also makes you feel safe to crack jokes at him in a way that really shows you how humble he is as a leader. All of his kindness is even more impressive when you consider how shrewd and snarky he is! He’s absolutely intelligent enough to be an evil villain, but he chooses not to be. I hope that more people get the pleasure and safety of learning from a boss like this.”
