  • Multi-Well Isnt What You Think it Is, and the True Benefits Can Be Significant

    ASME Hydraulic Fracturing 2015 Conference

Multi-well pads are now the norm for oil and gas installations, driven by the exponential growth in hydraulic fracturing in the last decade. Multi-well pads are now the norm for oil and gas installations, driven by the exponential growth in hydraulic fracturing in the last decade. This has improved efficiency, cut operational costs, and helped to increase production across the board. But there’s far more work to be done. The centralized wellhead designs that many operators have installed as “multi-well systems” don’t effectively leverage all of the economic and efficiency gains of true, consolidated installations. Why? Because centralizing well heads onto a multi-well pad is just the first step in the process. Now operators need to bring equipment together through consolidation to reduce the number of physical pieces required for each site. This is what true multi-well installations look like today. The benefits of this approach can be significant. Multi-well production facilities are the engineered surface facilities that leverage directional drilling techniques and provide the primary processing and conveyance for multiple oil and gas wells at a well site. Not only do consolidated facilities save on capital expenditures by requiring fewer pieces of equipment to accomplish the same job, but by building facilities in locations where they can maximize production, operators are able to de-bottleneck and sustain increased levels of production throughout the type curve. This facility consolidation also helps operators better plan their installations, making smarter decisions on regulatory and environmental issues for the site as a whole. The message for operators is clear: Multi-well pads are no longer an optional part of oil and gas well design and construction. But you need to make sure you are approaching multi-well intelligently, beyond simply centralizing the well-heads. You’re already engineering the wellbore and frac systems; why not design your upstream facilities with the same precision and care? It will pay dividends.
