Our Chief Delivery Officer, Jodi Leo, just published a piece in Route Fifty on expanding access to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)! Over the past few years, millions of potentially eligible people are leaving SNAP benefits on the table. Jodi suggests that the key to closing this coverage gap lies in strong data sharing practices, which can help federal and state agencies identify potentially eligible individuals, ease the income verification process, and even reduce fraud. Recently, New Mexico saw an 18% increase in enrollment in the Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) after the project team developed a data-sharing tool between the state’s SNAP, Medicaid, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, and WIC agencies. In Vermont, an API-first approach helped integrate the enrollment and eligibility processes for its 37 health care and financial benefit programs. In a matter of months, they reduced the number of days it took to provide an eligibility determination to SNAP applicants by 44%. Integrated eligibility and modern APIs aren’t just technical upgrades — they’re a path to better benefits delivery and government infrastructure that’s resilient, adaptable, and human-centered. Great news coming out of Nava Labs! We’re happy to announce that we’re partnering with the Goodwill Central Texas and Goodwill Keystone in Pennsylvania to pilot an #AI-powered resource referral tool with caseworkers as part of a grant from the Gates Foundation. This tool aims to make it easier for Goodwill staff to refer clients to a range of other health and social services beyond what’s offered at the organization. Last week marked the 10 year anniversary of a company near and dear to my heart: Nava I joined as employee # 12 as their first recruiter and eventually led the entire people ops function. Over time I created organizational structure, instituted values-driven hiring, and nurtured a culture that was inclusive, thoughtful, and deeply human. It was work that came straight from my heart in concert with the vision of Nava’s founders. Today, Nava is over 500 people strong. They’re still doing the hard, vital work of improving how government services show up in people’s lives. They’ve even launched a philanthropic arm to explore and prototype forward-thinking policies, including the ethical use of AI in public systems. I couldn't be more proud of the team, and I'm so grateful I had the opportunity to shape its early chapters. Happy Birthday, Nava. May you continue to do the hard and often unforgiving work of making critical government services accessible to everyone. We need it now more than ever. ❤️ (more about Nava's history and story for those curious: https://xmrrwallet.com/cmx.plnkd.in/giVYnarj)
