The City of Opportunity

About us

We're proud of our 200-year heritage. And today, Vallejo continues to be a friendly, active waterfront community that attracts innovative and hardworking people and businesses. This is reflected in Vallejo being ranked the hottest real estate market in the United States for the past twelve months. The City of Vallejo's story begins in 1844 when General Mariano G. Vallejo saw the promise of the area. Named after him and twice the site of the state capitol in the 1850s, Vallejo grew into an important shipping and naval center. Legend has it that Mare Island got its name after Gen. Vallejo drove a herd of horses across the Carquinez Strait. Established in 1854, Mare Island Naval Shipyard was the West Coast's first shipyard. Decommissioned in 1996, Mare Island is now home to more than 100 businesses and has become an industrial, commercial and residential engine for the Bay Area. A strong economy and affordable housing have meant new prosperity for Vallejo, as businesses and residents come to the city. Some are attracted by the beautifully restored Victorian homes and business fronts; others by the newer homes in the Northgate and Hiddenbrooke developments. The city recently earned Main Street designation, and as a result our downtown area has benefited from on-site training in effective commercial district revitalization, technical assistance, consulting services, networking activities, and site assessments from California Main Street. Waterfront and Mare Island redevelopment have become a community effort, with input from residents helping shape the future of what will become the most important economic generators for the city. The city's Ferry Terminal and ferry services have served as a model for the rest of the Bay Area, helping make Vallejo a transportation and commuter hub for the North Bay with over 1 million riders annually. Six Flags Marine World, restaurants and the Downtown Farmer's Market help make Vallejo the vibrant community it is today.

Updates

  • Big News! National Night Out Date Has Changed for Solano County! Exciting update for our community—Solano County is making a smart move by shifting its National Night Out celebration to the first Tuesday in October! Mark your calendars for October 7th because this change means a cooler, more comfortable evening for everyone. Also, with kids back to school it will conflict less with vacations. In past years, scorching temperatures—often reaching nearly 100 degrees— and summer vacations have put a damper on participation. By adjusting the date, the Solano County Law Enforcement Administrators Association (SCLEAA) hopes to encourage more people to come together, connect, and celebrate our vibrant community without the heat holding us back. While this new date does not align with other counties across Northern California, many communities across the country have made the same switch, recognizing that extreme heat and the conflict with summer vacations can put a damper on the fun. The SCLEAA made this adjustment with that in mind—to ensure maximum participation and a night to remember! So let’s make this year’s National Night Out bigger and better than ever! Join us in Vallejo as we honor our police officers, first responders, and most importantly—each other. Let’s come together to strengthen our community, build relationships, and create lasting memories. • City of Vallejo Continues Efforts to Address Pest Issues The City of Vallejo’s Public Works Department is aggressively addressing recent increased rodent activity in and around the Ferry building and downtown corridor. Additional Traps In partnership with the City’s pest control contractor, Public Works crews deployed additional traps today and conducted follow-up inspections on traps placed last Friday. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to reduce rodent presence and protect public health and safety. Enhanced Street Sweeping Continues An expanded street sweeping schedule remains in effect through the end of July, with ongoing evaluations to determine where further service is needed. Routine Inspections & Clean-Up Crews are actively monitoring the area and removing any deceased rodents to maintain cleanliness and prevent further infestation. Community Collaboration City staff have reached out to local property and business owners to coordinate abatement efforts. The City encourages input from both residents and business owners to strengthen the response and tailor solutions to community needs. “The health and safety of our community is our top priority,” said Assistant City Manager Nalungo Conley, who has been helping to spearhead this effort. “We’re committed to working hand-in-hand with our partners and the public to resolve this issue swiftly and effectively.” For questions or to share feedback, community members are invited to contact the Assistant City Manager, Nalungo Conley, at nalungo.conley@cityofvallejo.net

  • City of Vallejo Initiates Coordinated Pest Abatement Efforts In response to recent concerns, the City of Vallejo has launched a coordinated pest control abatement initiative with its pest control contractor. City staff met with the pest control contractor today, Friday, July 25, 2025, to assess affected areas and develop a comprehensive action plan aimed at mitigating the issue. As part of the initial response, traps were placed in targeted locations today. The pest control contractor will return on Monday to conduct follow-up inspections and deploy additional traps. According to the pest control contractor, the remediation techniques being implemented are highly effective, and residents can expect to see noticeable improvements within the coming week. To further support these efforts, the City of Vallejo Public Works Department will operate street sweepers in the impacted areas multiple times daily throughout the week. This enhanced cleaning schedule is designed to complement the pest control measures and improve overall sanitation. City staff will continue to closely monitor the situation and collaborate with the pest control contractor to ensure sustained progress. Additional updates will be provided as the initiative advances. For more information or to report specific trouble spots of rodent infestation, please contact Assistant City Manager, Nalungo Conley, email: nalungo.conley@cityofvallejo.net
