  • In an interview with Trends, Protealis-CEO Benjamin Laga and Private Capital Belgium Secretary General Jan Alexander dive into the inspiring story of Protealis, a Ghent-based company reshaping our food future. This spin-out from VIB and ILVO is tackling a crucial European challenge with a game-changing solution: developing high-tech, non-GMO soy varieties that thrive in the Northern European climate. Why is this such a powerful example of Belgian innovation? 🌱 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝘆: By growing protein locally, we reduce our reliance on imports from North and South America and strengthen our food security. 🌍 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: Locally grown soy is ecological. It prevents deforestation in the Amazon, cuts down on CO₂ emissions from transport, and, as a legume, requires no nitrogen fertiliser. 📈 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵: Protealis offers farmers a profitable and sustainable alternative while building an impressive growth story of its own, with revenue multiplying fivefold last year. This success wouldn't have been possible without a strong ecosystem of investors. As our Secretary General points out, Protealis is a textbook example of how private capital plays a critical role in guiding a promising technology through the infamous ‘valley of death’. 𝘑𝘢𝘯 𝘈𝘭𝘦𝘹𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳: “𝘓𝘰𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘭𝘢𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘌𝘶𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘢𝘯 𝘢𝘮𝘣𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴. To create more champions like this, a clear long-term vision from the government is essential, rather than constant adjustments to the fiscal framework. A big thanks to Benjamin Laga, the entire Protealis team and Benny Debruyne! Discover the full interview below.
