The BRAC Frugal Innovation Forum (FIF) began in 2013 as a two-day event dedicated to showcasing Southern-led innovations and fostering dialogue among changemakers in the Global South. Over the years, FIF became a vital platform where social innovators, policymakers, academics, entrepreneurs, and funders could share lessons, address challenges, and explore scalable solutions. Every journey begins with a single step, and ours started by identifying the most pressing need in the Global South—simple, affordable, and impactful solutions. We began with Scaling Simple Solutions, then moved to Scaling Digitally to amplify reach. This led us to Pushing the Boundaries of Development, challenging traditional approaches to create transformative change. As vulnerabilities grew, we focused on Scaling Resilience, which highlighted the importance of Scaling Quality Education as a foundation for sustainable development. From there, we turned to Scaling Opportunities for Youth to ensure education translated into real potential. The pandemic then prompted us to reimagine the Future of Development in a Post-Pandemic World, ultimately bringing us to Climate Adaptation—the urgent and unifying theme that ties together all our past learnings and future priorities.

Last Saturday, I had the honor of speaking at the Frugal Innovation Forum 2024, hosted by BRAC—an institution that has consistently redefined how we approach poverty, inclusion, and innovation in the Global South. My deepest gratitude to BRAC and the organizers of FIF for inviting me to share my thoughts on a panel titled: “Creating an Enabling Environment – Uniting the Private and Public Sector.” A special thanks to Asif Saleh , CEO and Executive Director of BRAC—and a dear friend—for not only extending the invitation, but also encouraging me to explore the exhibit space. It was in that space that I encountered some of the most inspiring early-stage ventures—startups building climate-resilient, rural-focused innovations that blend technology, empathy, and grassroots wisdom. These founders aren’t just building businesses—they’re redesigning the future of resilience from the ground up. In my remarks, I shared how Shwapno, more than being a retailer, has become a platform for climate resilience, inclusive employment, and last-mile transformation. Because in a country where 70% of the poor are tied to agriculture—retail reform is climate reform. As Bangladesh enters a new chapter of economic transition and global engagement, I believe it is time to unify our innovation ecosystems, not fragment them. To scale platforms, not just pilot projects. Thank you again to the BRAC team, my fellow panelists, and the many young innovators who reminded me: The future is already being built. Three key takeaways from the first day of Frugal Innovation Forum 2025: 1. Climate adaptation should not be only about survival. It should be about living a dignified life, with access to livelihoods and a space for growth. 2. Transformative adaptation must be about system shifts, not just seasonal tweaks. 3. Localisation is not translation, it is transformation. Change cannot be expected just by incorporating technology. Communities' access, readiness, and trust are pre- requisites for the adoption of climate advisories.
