Since its inception, Brac University has conducted a series of cross-sectoral research on climate change and disaster management in direct collaboration with BRAC. To coordinate and manage these different activities, the Syndicate and the Board of Trustees of Brac University have accorded for the establishment of a research center titled “Centre for Climate Change and Environmental Research (C3ER)”. The Centre establishes a synergy between BRACU and BRAC in the field of climate change and other environmental issues. The C3ER focuses on: - Understanding the physical science of climate change and generation of climate change scenario for Bangladesh at the local level - Sea level rise and storm surge modeling for coastal zone protection against sea-level rise and storm surges - Biophysical modeling for assessing the impact of climate change on the environment - Integrated adaptation planning and environment-friendly infrastructure design - Economics of adaptation to climate change and investment needs identification - Mitigation through emission reduction with particular focus on renewable energy options - Comprehensive disaster management in a changing climate - Application of biotechnological research at field level for the development of climate-resilient cropping system - Community based adaptation and awareness-raising at the local level - Education curricula development for students and also for the training of local people, civil society, and professionals - Gender and climate-induced migration including population dynamics and displacement - Natural resource management to prevent degradation and preservation of ecologically critical areas - Water supply and sanitation, pollution control, and environmental governance - Conservations of endangered flora and fauna to protect them from human invasions. - Policy formulation for mainstreaming climate change adaptation in sectoral strategy and plan options

🌏 Poster Presentation at ICECA 2025 🌿 Ms. Sadia Jahan Rothi, Environmental Management and Youth Engagement Specialist and Ms. Tanbi Tanaya Sarker, Geography and Environment Specialist from C3ER, BRAC University participated in the International Conference on Environment and Climate Action (ICECA) 2025, held from August 1–2 in Chittagong, Bangladesh. The conference was organised by the Department of Environmental Science at the Asian University for Women (AUW) and brought together researchers , academician, professionals and climate advocates committed to transformative environmental and climate action. Ms. Tanbi Tanaya Sarker presented a powerful poster on “Climate-induced Challenges and Gender Vulnerabilities in Bangladesh,” shedding light on the intersection of climate change and social inequities. Ms. Rothi presented her research on “Ecosystem-Based Adaptation (EbA): Opportunities in Bangladesh” under the theme Planet in Balance, emphasizing the role of nature-based, community-led solutions in building climate resilience. Together, their contributions showcased the urgent need for inclusive, gender-responsive, and ecosystem-based approaches to climate action. 🌱✨

A house that grows, floats, and stays cool all year round! 🏠🌊☀️ Faced with rising climate risks, Bangladesh needs bold, adaptive solutions. This innovative amphibious house, which can float during floods, expand with families, and stay naturally cool, offers a glimpse into the future of climate-resilient living. The house was originally piloted by the University of Dundee and Resilience Solutions in Bangladesh, with strategic collaboration from C3ER, BRAC University. The design received the UN’s prestigious Risk Award in 2019 for its strength, durability, and sustainability. 🏆 It continues to evolve through two more development phases, supported by Munich Re Foundation and the Scottish Government. 🌿🌏 Celebration of World Nature Conservation Day 2025! 🐯👣 To mark World Nature Conservation Day 2025, C3ER, BRAC University, in collaboration with CARE Bangladesh, Eco-Network Global, and Young Climate Action Network (YOUCAN), hosted a two-day webinar (28-29 July) titled "Connecting Communities in Wildlife Conservation" 🦜🦋 📢 The event spotlighted the power of community-led conservation, showcasing grassroots stories, youth-driven action, and collaborative approaches to protect ecosystems in Bangladesh and beyond. 💬🌱 👥 Day 1 featured 🎙️ Keynote speaker Shahriar Caesar Rahman, CEO, Creative Conservation Alliance, inspired us with stories of community-powered success in remote biodiversity hotspots. 🌿 It also featured vibrant breakout discussions where participants explored: ✨ How youth can drive conservation through education, activism, and advocacy 💡 Barriers like funding, logistics & trust faced by passionate youth 🤝 Strategies for meaningful community engagement from culturally-rooted campaigns to social media advocacy! 📲 🎓 Day 2 brought expert insights from: 🔹 Dr. Ainun Nishat, Professor Emeritus and Adviser, C3ER, BRAC University – on policy, global conventions & aligning with climate-biodiversity goals 🔹Dr. Dwijendra Lal Mallick, Research Fellow at Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies (BCAS)– on stakeholder inclusion, field realities & empowering youth at the grassroots 👣 🧩 The message was clear: Youth are not just the future, they are today’s changemakers! 💪🌏 🙏 A heartfelt thank you to all who joined and contributed.
