Since 2012, Reconciliation Australia has conducted the Workplace Reconciliation Barometer (WRB) every two years, surveying employees in organisations with a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). The WRB survey results are compared with responses from the general population drawn from the Australian Reconciliation Barometer (ARB) to give an indication of the impact of RAPs on understanding of First Nations histories and cultures and attitudes towards reconciliation. Narragunnawali Awards 2025 judges are currently visiting finalists to learn more about each early learning service and school’s commitment to reconciliation in education. Their first stop is Goodstart Shailer Park, located on the Country of the Jagera and Yugambeh speaking people in Logan (Meanjin/Brisbane), that has a nine-year history of strong reconciliation effort partnering closely with local Aboriginal education organisation, Gunya Meta. Trailblazer for Aboriginal professional sportspeople, rugby league star forward, and Former Origin Great (FOG) Sam Backo has passed away in Cairns. He was an exceptional athlete who played for the Canberra Raiders, Brisbane Broncos and the Queensland Maroons but he was much more than his footy. Mr Backo was a proud fighter for his Warragamay and South Sea Islander peoples. He loved his family and took his cultural responsibilities very seriously. Son of the First Nations leader, Dr Evelyn Scott AO, he would often quote a passage that hung on his mother’s wall ‘We all belong to one race, the human race’. He was committed to the struggle of First Nations peoples and for South Sea Islander justice and a warrior against racism in sport. Mr Backo is survived by his wife, children, his grand and great-grandchildren, his sisters and his extended family. Garma Festival kicks off its four-day event on Friday 1 August. 2025 marks the 25th anniversary of the Youthu Yindi Foundation first staging the celebration of Yolngu art, culture, dance, ceremony and song, and an important meeting point for the clans and families of the region. Mr Paul Coe was a Wiradjuri Elder and life-long advocate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander rights and self-determination. Mr Coe was part of a group who established Australia’s first Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) in Redfern in 1970. The Redfern ALS was one of the first Aboriginal community-controlled organisations and heralded a boom in legal, health and other Aboriginal-controlled organisations across the country. Mr Coe was a leading supporter of the Gurindji land rights fight and joined the Aboriginal Tent Embassy in its very early days. He led his Wiradjuri peoples legal battle for sovereignty, taking their fight to the High Court of Australia in 1979. Throughout his life Mr Coe made substantial contributions to progressing the rights of First Nations peoples and advocating for their self-determination. Tiwi and Anmatjere woman Marion Scrymgour has this week become the first Aboriginal person to chair the House of Representatives Chamber, as a member of the Speaker’s Panel. Ms Scrymgour, the member for the Northern Territory seat of Lingiari, said in a social media post that it was a huge moment for the Parliament. "Aboriginal people deserve to be in every chair, at every table. "I grew up one of 11 siblings from a working class family in Darwin. My father was a Stolen Generations man who was forcibly removed from his family by the Parliament I sit in today. "Change happens, it can be slow and it can be painful, but Aboriginal people are strong, we deserve to take our place in this country." Australia's record on human rights is going backwards, according to a coalition of more than 150 First Nations, legal and advocacy organisations. It identifies critical human rights issues where Australia is falling short of its legal obligations, including ongoing systemic racism against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, saying urgent action is needed to raise the age of criminal responsibility to at least 14; fully incorporate the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples into Australian laws; establish a Makarrata Commission; and implement self-determined solutions to justice problems.
