Following the advice of a doctor friend, Charles R. Walgreen Sr. traveled to Hot Springs, Arkansas, in 1907 to cure the lingering effects of malaria in the town’s therapeutic waters. It was meant to be a getaway to “disconnect” and restore his health, but that was an impossible ask for Charles. While in Hot Springs, he bought a local drugstore and turned it into a Walgreens, making it the first location outside his home state of Illinois.
