In the first edition of the Verily Tech Blog, we explain the rationale behind using FHIRPath, which is to ensure everyone can speak the same healthcare data language. But getting it to work in code isn’t exactly plug-and-play. The first attempt was messy and labor-intensive. Read our next blog to learn how product engineering made FHIRPath parsing cleaner, faster, and much easier to extend by using ANTLR, a tool that turns a language’s grammar into working code: https://xmrrwallet.com/cmx.pveri.ly/3GP16NJ #PrecisionHealth #HealthcareData #interoperability

35 years ago, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law – a landmark moment that affirmed the civil rights of millions of people with disabilities in the U.S. This July, as we honor both the ADA’s 35th anniversary and Disability Pride Month, I’ve been reflecting on what it means to lead accessibility and inclusion in the health care space. At Verily, I’m proud to stand alongside colleagues across functions – from strategic planning to collaborative problem-solving and co-designing with communities – in showing that inclusion isn’t just a value we hold, it’s a practice we live. We believe that diverse abilities strengthen teams and spark innovation. We see it in our work every day. And we know that equitable access to healthcare – digital or physical – must be designed with communities, not for them. Disability Pride Month is a time to amplify the voices and contributions of people with disabilities and to celebrate the power of allyship. Here’s to continuing the work — together — toward a more accessible and equitable future in health for all. #ADA35 #HealthEquity #A11Y #InclusiveDesign
Live from HLTH USA - Vindell Washington, our Chief Clinical Officer and Head of Health Equity, speaking on DEI principles to advance health equity. "At Verily, we talk about N of 1. We want to know as much as we can about each patient's journey so we can treat them as an individual." “We want to spend time with the communities we’re designing for so the outcomes lift all communities and leave no one behind. It is not only an ethical and moral thing to do, it's the right business thing to do." #HLTHUSA #HealthEquity #PrecisionHealth

Early detection of diabetic retinopathy can mitigate vision loss by over 90%, but access to screening remains a challenge. Our new study published in JMIR Publications highlights the Verily Numetric Retinal Camera (VNRC) as a potential solution for integrated, primary care-based diabetic retinopathy screening. The results showed 98.5% of images captured by the VNRC were graded as sufficient for clinical interpretation. Learn how the Verily Numetric Retinal Camera's performance and usability could expand access and close gaps in care: https://xmrrwallet.com/cmx.pveri.ly/3IKltfx #DiabeticRetinopathy #HealthcareInnovation #VisionCare

New Verily-led research published in Nature! Diabetes is traditionally managed with conventional blood tests, limiting early detection and personalized interventions. The research, which involved analyzing blood protein profiles, shows promising results in identifying individuals with altered protein profiles but without a formal diabetes diagnosis. For this longitudinal study, researchers collected multi-modal data from participants of the Project Baseline Health Study (PBHS), including medical history, clinical laboratory tests, and molecular and digital profiling. They then developed blood protein profiles, using established clinical characteristics of diabetes and prediabetes within the PBHS cohort. These findings can enable deeper patient stratification and help refine diagnostic approaches and personalized treatment efforts. At Verily, we believe that analyzing many different types of health data is key to deeply understanding diseases. Type 2 diabetes is a complex disease, making prevention, diagnosis, and monitoring complicated. New Verily-led research published in Nature Portfolio shows the potential to improve the identification of people at higher risk of developing diabetes by analyzing blood protein profiles. The 4-year study included participants with diverse backgrounds and a wide range of health states from the Project Baseline Health Study. Researchers concluded that understanding diabetes at the molecular level can help refine diagnostic approaches and personalized treatment efforts.
