I asked a Starbucks barista about their pay structure. It was refreshingly simple. "Barista - lower pay range Shift Supervisor - medium pay range Store Manager - higher pay range" Brilliant! Satisfied, I ordered a medium coffee. "What size?" she asked. "Medium. Not small, not large. The one in the middle." I explained. "We don't have small or large. We have Tall, Grande and Venti." "Which one is medium?" "Grande." "But doesn't grande means large in Spanish." "It's our medium." she said "So tall is small?" "Yes." "Are you making fun of my height" I asked The irony hit me like an espresso: Their pay structure? Crystal clear. Their coffee structure? Requires a linguistics degree. It's all there on the board. Completely transparent. Every size, every option, every price. But transparency without clarity is just chaos with good intentions. Your pay structure shouldn't need a Rosetta Stone matrix. Neither should your coffee order. I'm off to ask for a Venti pay rise. #FridayFun #PayTransparency #HRHumour #CoffeeBreak
