I had the pleasure of joining a panel at Brown University's B-Lab, a summer accelerator supporting Brown and Rhode Island School of Design students building compelling ventures. Alongside Annette Tonti, Stacey Messier, Stefanie Engelhardt, Viktor Gavrielov and Luca Carnevale, I shared insight on the resources, programming opportunities like NEMIC (New England Medical Innovation Center)'s MedTech Leadership Program, and other organizations in Rhode Island that support early-stage entrepreneurs. We touched on everything from funding opportunities to team-building and how to balance a startup with being a new grad entering the workforce! A valuable morning for all parties! A big thank you to Katie Calabro and Gloria Kuzmenko-Latimer for putting this event together!

It was a pleasure hosting the TRIBE ACADEMY Courage Builder Summer Externship presentations & graduation here at the NEMIC Offices last Thursday. Thank you to Nishita Roy-Pope and RI Life Science Hub for inspiring young adult career development in the State, and promoting a thriving Life Science economy right here in Rhode Island. We were honored to not only be selected as host, but to participate in the judging panel along with esteemed partners & colleagues. A big hearty congratulations to all the participants, and well done on your presentations! Looking forward to everything the future has in store for all.
It was inspiring to attend the final presentations of the Courage Builder (TRIBE ACADEMY) Summer Externship, where a talented group of Rhode Island college students shared what they learned over five weeks exploring our state’s life sciences sector. Supported by Life Science Partner funding from the RI Life Science Hub, students visited local companies, engaged with industry leaders and applied their skills to real-world projects at the intersection of technology and healthcare. Adrian Mora, a University of Rhode Island student in Computer Science and Cybersecurity, shared: “Working on the heart disease model made it click for me — I saw how something I built could actually help people. It got me thinking more seriously about what I want to do with my career in tech and future” Congratulations to the students and thank you to Courage Builder for leading this important effort to develop RI’s future life sciences workforce.

After over six incredible years at NEMIC, I’ve made the bittersweet decision to leap into a new chapter, exploring new career opportunities in the MedTech sector while beginning an exciting personal adventure with my husband (as of this past Thursday!) in the Netherlands. Come September, I’ll be stepping down from my role as Executive Director and helping onboard a new ED to carry NEMIC into its next chapter. This transition is both thrilling and emotional. Leaving NEMIC, which has often felt like my own “baby,” is no small thing. Letting go of the reins will be tough, but I’m confident the organization is in great hands. Our talented, passionate team (Andrew and Emily) is well-equipped to keep building on our momentum, with continued support from our fantastic MPs, Aidan and Lydia, a growing board, and a belief that Rhode Island has a unique opportunity to punch well above its weight in MedTech. NEMIC has experienced remarkable growth since its early days. Many don’t realize the organization’s origins (even before my time) were about 40 miles north of Providence. That first year was full of challenges, but everything changed when we decided to plant roots here in PVD. What initially felt like barriers quickly became strengths. We found a scrappy, accessible ecosystem filled with industry professionals, clinicians, and experts eager to support us. Rhode Island may be small, but its size has become a superpower for building deep, collaborative relationships. Each year, our programs have drawn growing interest, participation, and impact, more founders, more breakthrough technologies, and an ever-stronger hunger to innovate in healthcare. Today, NEMIC supports over 50 active startups at any given time, along with a vibrant network of alumni companies that continue to thrive. We keep in touch through everything from a breakthrough “We just got FDA clearance!” email to impromptu visits—where founders perch on my little office stoop to talk through their next fundraising goal, often pausing to scratch Ron, my lil shih tzu, snoozing under my desk. While we’ve yet to see a “unicorn” emerge, what we are seeing is a powerful wave of small-but-mighty startups tackling real problems in healthcare and making tangible progress. I’m confident that one of them will break through in a big way, and I look forward to cheering them on from across the pond! What I’ll miss most, aside from our phenomenal team, are the entrepreneurs. Working with mission-driven founders so deeply committed to improving lives has been the most inspiring part of my role. Thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey: our partners, mentors, collaborators, and community. I am endlessly grateful and excited to see what’s next for both NEMIC and for me!
