New data was published yesterday showing that heart attack deaths have actually fallen almost 90% in the past 55 years! It's encouraging as we're clearly getting better at treating heart attacks and helping more people survive. But the article also notes that heart disease remains the number one killer of Americans, and that hasn't changed. The same study found deaths from hypertensive heart disease have increased by a whopping 450 percent! Why is this? For one, many people who survive a heart attack later face serious complications like heart failure or arrhythmias because of the damage done to the heart. So while fewer people may be dying from heart attacks directly, they’re still dying from the long-term effects, shifting heart attacks from a primary, to a secondary cause of death. Main take-away? We've gotten very good at treatment and intervention, but still have much ground to cover in the area of prevention. That’s why we can’t take our foot off the gas.
