  • We told Gen Z to work hard and opportunity would follow. But the system we gave them is broken. HarrisX, in partnership with the Schultz Family Foundation, is proud to have just completed one of the most comprehensive studies on the school-to-work pipeline in the U.S. — and the findings are a wake-up call. Based on more than 5,700 interviews with young adults, parents, educators, and employers, The Broken Marketplace reveals: • 43% of Gen Z say the education system isn’t working • 45% say employment support is failing them • 46% feel unprepared for the future job market • 54% are concerned AI will replace the jobs they’re aiming for Meanwhile, the adults meant to guide them are misaligned. Employers require experience but don’t offer it. Parents give advice based on a different era. Counselors and navigators are stretched too thin. Millions of young Americans are being left to figure it out alone. The Broken Marketplace: America’s School-to-Work Crisis is a call to action for employers, educators, and policymakers to build a system that actually works for today’s economy. I had the opportunity to join errol barnett on CBS News to talk about something deeply important: the #BrokenMarketplace of opportunity facing millions of young adults in America today. Too many 18–24 year-olds feel unprepared for the future of work — not because they lack drive or ambition, but because the institutions meant to guide them are fundamentally out of sync. - Guidance is outdated. - Schools and employers are disconnected. - And as a result, 70% of young adults are now turning to platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube for career advice. The good news? This can be fixed. There are bright spots across the country. But we need alignment — between education systems, employers, and parents — to build pathways of opportunity for the economy of today and the one that’s coming. This isn’t just a youth issue — it’s an economic imperative. The Schultz Family Foundation's new study, produced in partnership with HarrisX - a Stagwell Inc. company explores the Broken Marketplace and what can be done to fix it. Why are so many young adults having such a hard time landing a good first job? A first-of-its-kind research project from the Schultz Family Foundation and HarrisX - a Stagwell Inc. company reveals a #BrokenMarketplace of opportunity. The school-to-work pathways for millions of young Americans—both those with and without college degrees—are far more deeply fractured than previously known, posing a significant threat to building the future workforce essential to growing the U.S. economy. 🏠 Parents lack understanding of the evolving workforce landscape and provide outdated advice. 79% give advice based on past personal experiences, not current external resources. 💼 Employers want experience but don’t help build it. 77% of employers require at least one year of experience from those seeking entry-level jobs, yet most do not offer internships, apprenticeships or other training programs. 📓 Educators, counselors, and other navigators are stuck in the past, prioritizing traditional pathways despite changing realities. 50% of employers say there is a mismatch between the skills taught by schools and what is needed by industry. Taken together, the study shows clearly how our nation’s education, training and employment marketplace—essential to the success of the next generation—is broken. The employment challenges facing the Class of 2025 are not a one-time aberration but a warning bell. Learn more at www.brokenmarketplace.org.

For decades, we've told young Americans that if they work hard and stay on the path, opportunity will follow. But as tens of millions of Gen Z enter adulthood, that promise has increasingly broken down. Our new national study with the Schultz Family Foundation, The Broken Marketplace: America’s School-to-Work Crisis, shows just how out of sync the current system is with the realities young people face. What we heard from Gen Z: ·      43% say the education system is broken and lacks effective guidance. ·      45% say the same of employment resources. ·      46% feel unprepared or unsure about their readiness for future jobs. ·      48% find the job/internship search difficult. ·      54% are worried or unsure that AI may replace the roles they’re aiming for. The study of more than 5,700 respondents also uncovers serious disconnects among those meant to support and guide young people: ·      Employers want experience but few offer early-career opportunities. ·      Parents give advice shaped by a world that no longer exists. ·      Navigators — educators, counselors, community leaders — are stretched thin and rarely collaborate across the ecosystem. The result? Tens of millions of young Americans are left to figure out their future alone. As I told Axios: “Parents are present but not engaged in the right ways. Employers say the right things, but set up barriers. Everyone assumes someone else is helping.” And as Howard Schultz and Sheri Kersch Schultz powerfully put it in their Fox News oped: “Our businesses and our overall economy won’t thrive over the long run if firms don’t invest in creating new opportunities for workers.” We need a new marketplace of opportunity in America — one that offers early experience, relevant guidance, and flexible pathways. Our economy cannot thrive without investing in the next generation of workers. • Happy 4th of July from Team HarrisX! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 As we come together to celebrate, we reflect on the shared values that bring us together, and remind ourselves that there is nothing wrong with this great country that cannot be cured by what is right in it. Today we release our annual HarrisX July 4th survey, which reveals a striking portrait of America on is 249th Independence Day. While an overwhelming 83% of Americans say they are proud to be American, and nearly 70% view the U.S. as the greatest country in the world, half believe the signers of the Declaration of Independence would be disappointed with how the nation has turned out. Our freedom and our rights top cherished values and what makes Americans proud, but only a third trust that the government acts in the people’s best interests, showing a stark trust deficit. Today, two-thirds think politicians prioritize personal agendas and interest over public service. And eventhough most see the U.S. as a land of opportunity and look ahead to its 250th anniversary with great pride, deep concerns persist about income inequality, healthcare costs, gun violence, and a political system many feel is driven by division and money. The findings in their own way underscore the greatness of America: the efforts, aspirations and struggle of "We the People..." to form "a more perfect Union" -- a country that is simultaneously celebratory and self-critical and ever ambitious on its most patriotic day. Enjoy, and wishing everyone a happy Independence Day!
