Hydro4M2 space mission update🚀 On 23 June 2025, Hydromars launched its Hydro4M2 payload aboard SpaceX’s Falcon 9 (Transporter-14 mission) from Vandenberg Space Force Base. Carried by The Exploration Company's Nyx capsule, Hydro4M2 was among 26 payloads inside the capsule. Nyx performed nominally in orbit, powering payloads, maintaining stability after separation from Falcon 9, and successfully re-entering Earth’s atmosphere. Unfortunately, a parachute failure during descent led to a crash in the Pacific Ocean on 24 June, resulting in the loss of all onboard payloads, including Hydro4M2. Although no mission data could be retrieved, the launch marked a significant milestone for Hydromars, validating key aspects of its rapid (<15-month) development process and offering valuable insights into the technical and operational demands of space deployment. Abhilash Vakkada Ramachandran, Ph.D. presented Hydromars' work at the 4th International Workshop on Membrane Distillation and Innovating Membrane Operations in Desalination and Water Reuse 2025 (CNR-ITM) under the theme: "Advancing sustainable life support systems through integrated water and nutrient recovery technologies." He shared our development of water recovery systems designed for space missions, focusing on reliability and efficiency in closed-loop operation. Dr. Ramachandran also described how the same core process is being applied on Earth, by our sister company in Odisha, India, to provide arsenic-free drinking water to local communities. Since 2020, Hydromars, an ESA Business Incubation Centre (BIC) alumnus, has been pioneering circular solutions for water recovery in space habitats. With the invaluable support of ESA BIC Sweden and the ESA Payload Masters program, Hydromars is set to test its first space-adapted equipment, Hydro4M2, aboard the Nyx vehicle on Falcon 9 in June 2025. Hydromars' CEO and Co-founder, Shorena Tsindeliani, together with Hydro4M2 project lead Arjun Monga, emphasise the importance of sustainable water management in space and innovation in extraterrestrial water recovery system. Hydromars has also received a grant from the Swedish National Space Agency (Rymdstyrelsen) to advance its latest initiative, the SUSTAIN project, focusing on advanced water purification and nutrient recovery for commercial space stations. Hydro4M2 handover 🚀 On December 13, the Hydro4M2 space payload was successfully delivered to The Exploration Company’s facility for integration into the Nyx capsule as part of Mission Possible. This achievement marks a significant milestone in Hydromars mission to advance water purification technologies for sustainable space exploration. ♻️ 🚀 Hydro4M2 is Hydromars first orbital demonstration payload, serving as a scaled-down prototype designed to validate core technology under the challenging conditions of microgravity. Once aboard the Nyx capsule, Hydro4M2 will undergo testing in a space environment, showcasing its potential to facilitate efficient water recovery💧and purification. 🛰️ During the Mission Possible launch, scheduled for mid-2025 from a Falcon 9 rocket 🚀, Hydro4M2 will capture and analyse critical metrics related to purification and recovery process ♻️ for a chosen feed, including thermal profiles, pressure variations, and fluid dynamics in microgravity.
