 I am delighted to tell you that after 7 years as a CEO, I have finally persuaded Seth Hallem, the original CEO and Co-founder of Coverity, to lead Certora in securing the DeFi ecosystem across Web3. Why now? We already have an amazing 80-person team with 25 internal security researchers and the best (recurring) clients in this space, includin AAVE, Lido, Balancer, ether.fi, Eigen Labs, MakerDAO SES, Morpho, Safe, Silo, and Status Now we’re expanding our management team to reach the next milestone.I  In recent years, we’ve cracked one of the most complex problems in computer science: developing a formal verification tool for executable programs that software developers can use seamlessly. And they have been using it. Certora Prover is the leading product for verifying complex Solidity and Rust programs, which are beyond the reach of other formal verification tools in both Web3 and Web2.  We’ve established ourselves as the pioneers in formal verification. Now, we’re evolving into the go-to hub for all Web3 security solutions. Among the many great people I’ve interacted with in my career, why was Seth the perfect choice?  It’s because Certora is a unique customer-centric company that combines strong engineering and security expertise, and that requires a CEO who is: (1) technical, can understand specs, complex bugs, and software engineering, (2) an expert in sales movements and BD, (3) deeply experienced with management, (4) dedicated and cares about people, and (5) a leader with a proven record of success.  You may wonder what my new role will be. I am not going anywhere and am not taking a chairman or president position—as always, I am still looking for more challenges to tackle, specifically in security tool building  I plan to advance Certora in three ways: (1) by strengthening customer relationships and increasing sales; (2) by branding Certora as a leading security company; and (3) by managing a new research team that will quickly develop prototypes of new security products and transfer them to our strong R&D department.  I’m also looking forward to spending more time with our clients and better understanding their needs so Certora can continue enabling them to “Move Fast and Break Nothing” by shipping innovative, safe protocols.

At EthCC[8], I hosted a hands-on workshop introducing the Certora Prover — the same tool used by protocols like Aave, EigenLayer and Jito to verify smart contract logic before it goes live. Existing tools struggle to catch them: - Fuzzing can miss edge cases - Formal verification requires significant setup and explores many unreachable states At EthCC 8, I presented a new application of bounded model checking (BMC) to smart contract security. BMC explores all external function call sequences up to a fixed length starting from a user-defined real initial state, helping to uncover realistic, reproducible bugs with much less effort than traditional formal methods. We've been developing this work at Certora to help bridge the gap between fuzzing and formal verification in a practical and automated way. Tools for finding smart contract bugs each come with tradeoffs. - Fuzzing is fast and easy to use, but often misses bugs that occur only on rare or specific inputs. - Formal verification offers complete coverage, but requires expertise, time, and effort to filter out unreachable results.
