There's plenty to do and experience in beautiful Sarina and surrounding areas. • Meet Taya Lindner - Visual and Media Arts teacher at Elanora State High School, and finalist in the prestigious 2025 Doyle’s Art Award with her landscape artwork Connection: Fingal Headland. Having achieved OP1 and Dux in Year 12, many expected Taya to pursue Law or Medicine, instead she used her academic scholarship at Griffith to study the Arts and Education. ‘My grandfather, a principal in Victoria, was my idol growing up, so it felt like a natural path. After my first (challenging!) Prac, I knew I’d found my place — the classroom,’ Taya shared. ‘I faced plenty of surprise and even discouragement for choosing the Arts and Education, but I believe you can be a “high achiever” and still follow a creative path that brings you joy and purpose.’ During high school the Art room was Taya’s safe, happy space – an environment where she felt free to be herself and an escape from the pressures of academic life. ‘Art taught me to see and approach the world differently, to find beauty everywhere, and that creative thinking is a life skill — not just something that happens on canvas.’ This work is part of Taya’s Connection series, which explores deep emotional and energetic bonds with special places in nature. ‘I’m inspired by the stunning landscapes of the southern Gold Coast — Springbrook, Tallebudgera, Fingal,’ she said. ‘This painting invites viewers into Fingal’s immersive beauty — where volcanic rock, coastal flora, and crashing waves swirl together. Perspectives merge, moments blur, and it captures more than a place — it evokes the feeling of salt in the air, light on water, and the pull of the tide.’ When we asked Taya to share a special moment from her career so far as a teacher, she answered: ‘A few years ago, The Courier-Mail featured the incredible artist Monica Rohan, and in her interview she thanked me for inspiring her as her high school Art teacher. To know you’ve helped light someone’s “heart fire” — that’s the most rewarding part of this job.’ 🌠 We’re truly grateful for educators like Taya who bring their passion and life experience into their lessons and create a safe space for creativity and self-expression to flourish. #SafeSchoolsRespectAll

  • Holly’s final prac placement marked more than just the end of her degree, it was a turning point in her professional journey. ‘I completed all of my prac placements in non-state schools in Cairns but my final prac was at White Rock State School. It was incredible and easily the most rewarding part of my journey so far,’ Holly said. ‘I was really hoping for a state school for my final prac so I could apply for the Teach Queensland Prac Placement Grant. The grant was a huge help both financially and professionally. It helped to cover travel and living expenses, and the cost of being away from paid work. Professionally, receiving the grant made me feel supported and valued as a preservice teacher. It also encouraged me to seriously consider a future in the state schooling system, knowing there are opportunities and support for beginning teachers. My previous prac placements were in Years 3 and 6 but my last placement confirmed that I am meant to be in the early years. My mentor teacher, Jenny Taylor [pictured], was incredibly supportive. Her coaching and expertise completely transformed the way I approach planning and teaching. I learned so much from her and I will always be grateful for her guidance.’ Now with graduation in sight and a new enthusiasm for teaching the early years, Holly has secured a permanent teaching position in Prep at Paramatta State School commencing in 2026. ‘I feel incredibly grateful and am beyond excited to begin my teaching career in such a supportive environment. This journey has confirmed that I am exactly where I am meant to be.’ We’re passionate about building a strong, capable workforce, and financial supports like the Teach Queensland Prac Placement Grant do just that by providing assistance to our future educators. • Today, on Schools Tree Day, we’re celebrating the leafy, shady and vibrant school grounds that make Queensland state schools so special. From manicured gardens and veggie patches to native plants and towering trees – some standing tall for decades – we’re incredibly lucky to learn and teach in such beautiful environments. But of course, none of this would be possible without our incredible groundskeepers. Thank you for nurturing and maintaining our school grounds – we truly appreciate your hard work and dedication. 💚 #SchoolsTreeDay
