Make This Year Count: 5 Tips to Advance Your Career

It’s a new year, and many are looking toward new beginnings. For security engineer Mudita K., that means taking on a new role as a people manager. We sat down with Mudita, who shared her tips.

Top Five Tips To Advance Your Career

🛠️ 1. Build skills early: “Before I became an engineering manager, I started by mentoring peers and offering support. I guided them through challenges, helped them set career goals, and supported them as they achieved those goals. As I invested in others' growth, I developed my own management skills and built confidence.”

💡 2. Find your why: “What appeals to me most about people management is the profound impact a manager can have on their team members' careers. Throughout my career, I've learned invaluable lessons from my managers, applying their advice both professionally and personally.

This sense of purpose and the chance to make a meaningful difference inspired me to move to people management.”

📚 3. Use your resources: “Meta has been incredibly encouraging throughout my transition to a managerial role. Their comprehensive support system, including access to training resources and mentorship programs, helped me develop the necessary skills for effective people management. Thanks to Meta’s help, I was able to navigate my new path with confidence and enthusiasm.”

🏃 4. Take the first step: “Having worked as an individual contributor for over nine years, making the shift to management required both courage and commitment.

While I was making this transition, I’d also become a new mom. Embracing the challenges that come with motherhood gave me the courage to pivot to management, driven by a desire to enrich the careers of those I work with.”

🌱 5. Never stop growing: “I aspire to be a manager who is adaptable and responsive to my team's needs, taking on different roles as situations demand. Whether it's being a problem solver, a listener, an advisor, or simply a supportive presence, I aim to provide what my team needs to reach its goals.

By being approachable and encouraging, I hope to inspire my team to learn continuously and achieve their full potential while enjoying the journey along the way.”

Excellent article on advancing career at Meta. I have been trying for a very long time to join the company, finally seemingly getting a break... But... a strange recruiting incident happened to me this week -- me being a seasoned SDE with the Amazon and T-Mobile experience and 15+ years of development under my belt.... Here's how it happened (very prosaically, at that): About a month ago I was contacted by the Meta recruiter, Sanjeet Kalotia, and I signed up on her schedule, waited for about 2 weeks. After finally connecting with her about an average L5 role in the Infrastructure dev team in Menlo Park /Bellevue, she took my schedule dates preferences for the interview, recorded my high-level background and skill details and career goals, and scheduled me for an interview. Next day she sends me a standard email stating that after careful consideration I was not qualified! What a shocker, indeed! To my inquiry reply email asking her how on earth did she (or her colleagues) have determined that without even a 45 min preliminary tech interview, she evaded by stating company's non-disclosure policies... And THAT is how my hopes were cut short...for no obvious reason, if you were to ask me. What an anticlimactic story. But hey! 🙂
