Answering Your Questions on Work & Leadership

Answering Your Questions on Work & Leadership

I loved my conversation on LinkedIn with Jessi Hempel, host of Hello Monday! to talk about the future of work, leadership, well-being and health. There were so many great questions in the comments that we didn’t have time to answer, so I wanted to respond to a few here.

1. For professionals feeling stuck, what strategies do you recommend for standing out and making a successful transition? Divya Gundlapalli

When thinking about a transition, we tend to spend most of our time thinking about what’s on the other side. But it’s also important to focus attention on the near side – that’s to say, on ourselves. If you’re feeling stuck, try not to make decisions in an emotional or reactive state. That means taking care of yourself so you can make decisions — and take risks — in a calm, considered way. It doesn’t mean you’ll be certain to get it right, but by nurturing your resilience, you’ll be better prepared to deal with the inevitable challenges and uncertainties.

2. How do you overcome imposter syndrome? James Mulenga

We all have imposter syndrome. If you haven’t ever experienced self-doubt, it means you might not be fully human. That’s the voice of what I call “the obnoxious roommate living in our head” — the one that feeds on putting us down and strengthening our insecurities and doubts. At each upward point in our careers, we’re going to be doing something we haven’t mastered – yet. That’s a good thing. Always being in your comfort zone means you’re not challenging yourself. But the obnoxious roommate only drains our energy and makes us less effective at whatever we want to do, and we can learn to silence it.

3. Around Microsteps, how can AI assist individuals in implementing these small, purposeful steps during significant career transitions? — Sandra Navarro

Through its power of hyper-personalization, an AI health coach can give real time, customized nudges and recommendations that can help people lower stress, improve our sleep and what we eat, how much we move, and build resilience –– all of which are essential in navigating big career transitions.

4. What are your thoughts about finding the right mentor? — Sethuraman Chidambaram, RPh

Finding the right mentor starts with seeking those who inspire you — not just in career success, but in how they live their lives. Look for someone who challenges you, supports your growth, and aligns with your values.

5. How can I manage my time for an optimally successful job search? — Miles Rosenberg Prioritize quality over quantity — focus on roles that truly align with your skills and values. Set daily goals, like reaching out to one new connection or refining your resume. Wishing you all the best on your search.

Great insights, thanks Arianna Huffington! Especially the reminder that growth and personal development only happens outside of our comfortzone is so true ... unfortunately some leaders haven had great success in what they were doing the last years either get scared or tired to challenge themselves. Being a great self-leader first is a truly active way of leading your life!
