How food can transform health and dignity with equity and purpose

Dion Dawson's latest piece is a must-read on how we rebuild systems through food—with equity, purpose, and people at the center. The article details Dion’s commitment to dignity, community-led solutions, and scalable, people-focused innovation, including its 'food is medicine' program in partnership with CountyCare at Cook County Health and Foodsmart. We’re proud to partner with Dion's Chicago Dream to help bring foodcare to life, integrating nutrition into patient care plans where it’s needed most. As Dion writes, a simple box of produce can do more than nourish—it can transform. Fresh Chief Dreamer Essay Alert! 🚨 What if we stopped treating food assistance like charity, and started treating it like the economic engine it truly is? At Dion's Chicago Dream, we’re not just delivering produce. We’re building a new food system—one that’s dignified, human-centered, and rooted in wealth creation for the very communities that have too long been left out. In my latest essay with the Global Food Institute at the George Washington University & Food Tank I share: “Economic justice isn’t a theory. It’s a delivery route. It’s a paycheck. It’s a clean box of collards handled with care. So the next time someone asks what innovation looks like in the fight against hunger or food security, tell them it looks like this: a job created, a family fed, a community healed—one box at a time.” This is food justice in action. This is what happens when communities lead the conversation, challenge stereotypes, and disrupt broken systems from the inside out. Love this for the people of Chicago and the non-traditional route to impacting hunger & access.

Thank you for sharing this. I’m currently studying social determinants of health in my Health Promotion master’s program, and this is such a strong example of a multi-level approach to creating change. It also shows how powerful good storytelling can be in bringing public attention to these efforts to inspire change. I love to share it with my class (and hopefully help amplify stories like this on your team someday!).
