According to the UN Refugee Agency, by June, 2024 there were 43.7 million refugees globally and counting as the world witnesses increasing conflicts. These are individuals who have been forced to flee their homes in the face of wars, persecution, or disasters. The 1951 Refugee Convention defines a refugee as a person who "owing to well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion, is outside the country of nationality and is unable or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail of the protection of that country."
