CFS and Google sign historic fusion energy deal

CFS is the largest and leading private fusion company. With over a thousand employees and $2 billion of capital invested, we're working to commercialize fusion power as fast as possible here at our headquarters in Devens, Massachusetts. We're announcing a deepening of our strategic partnership with Google. As part of that, they'll offtake half the power or the first ARC power plant. Additionally, they'll increase their investment in the company. Importantly, this partnership isn't just about the first power plant. We now have a strong demand signal that people want fusion power and they're willing to do things like invest and commit to taking the power in order to help make it happen. We've seen very important scientific and engineering breakthroughs from CFS and we're excited to partner with CFS to take this technology to scale. Fusion is so important and so game changing it could literally benefit the entire world. ARC is our version of a fusion power plant. It'll make 400MW of electricity. ARC fusion power plants will produce power around the clock, 24/7. That can be sited anywhere around the world, including near data centers that power AI or cloud computing. And this can be done with no greenhouse gas emissions. So CFS is building a type of fusion machine called a tokamak. Within this, you use magnets to hold your fuel in a state of matter we call a plasma. Our fuel will be two types of hydrogen: deuterium and tritium. Once you've gotten your fuel hot enough, it starts to fuse to form helium and a fast moving neutron. The neutron comes out of your magnetic field and we absorb it in a material around the fuel that we call the blanket. So this blanket is made out of a molten salt. And you use that hot molten salt to boil water and so you make steam. You put that steam through a turbine and then that makes electricity. So Google has been working on clean energy technologies now for over 15 years. And we played a very important role in helping to take wind and solar power to scale. We hope that by working with CFS we can help to both provide critical support and make a market not only for Google, but for the world. In order to get where we want to go with increasingly large amounts of clean power available for everyone, it's going to take innovation. Not just in the science and technology, but also how we partner, how we structure deals. This is a comprehensive deal. And in this case, it's taking two innovative companies, Google and CFS, pairing them up to drive the future.
