How to empower your team to solve problems without you

"My team calls me every Sunday for help with basic tasks like changing the soda." That's what a client told me during our coaching session. The problem? The team wasn't empowered to solve problems independently. The solution we created: 1️⃣ Build an "Oh Shit Guide" for common issues 2️⃣ Set clear communication boundaries 3️⃣ Hire people who are naturally proactive 4️⃣ Stop rescuing staff from every minor problem When your team can't function without you, that's not loyalty. That's dependency. And dependency kills growth, burns you out, and destroys team confidence. How do you empower your team to solve problems without you? Repost this if you think other restaurant leaders need to see it. #restaurantoperations #leadership #teamdevelopment

So many gems here. I love the "oh shit" guide - great way to consolidate all the little hiccups that you've gone over countless times but have it documented means less wake up calls for you. Having to review that guide as a standard SOP and ensure everyone has access to it, not just team leaders, is a great way for everyone on the team to be accountable. Regularly having folks do these routine tasks before it turns into an "oh shit" moment, is a great way to build confidence.

Empowering teams is essential for growth . I love the idea of an "Oh Shit Guide"! It’s about creating a culture where everyone feels confident. Christin, your insights here are invaluable for leaders looking to foster independence.

One piece of advice I got when I moved into leadership was to stop answering the calls immediately. Because everyone’s first instinct is to call for help rather than figure it out themselves. If you’re unavailable, they move to the step of figuring it out themselves. It grows your team members and makes them more resilient. When you call them back later on they’re like oh there was this problem but here’s what I did to figure it out myself. You can hear how proud they are of themselves in their voice!
