In honor of the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, we proudly recognize Emmett Christie for his incredible contributions to Challenger Athletics. Since 2015, Emmett has volunteered and organized sports clinics for children with developmental disabilities, creating a space where every child can feel included, confident, and celebrated. Emmett’s work exemplifies the spirit of the ADA by promoting access, opportunity, and dignity for all. Challenger Athletics basically is a non-profit that teaches kids with special needs various sports. My daughter Maeve was very active in sports so we wanted to get her more involved in the community and also to learn some new sports. A year later I got involved on their board and now I help them fundraise as well as take over some of the clinics and help out when I can. It gives me a chance to give back to my community while watching my daughter Maeve forge new friendships also learn new sports and have fun. We also push our kids and their abilities. We try to teach them and bring them into new levels in each of the sports that they're participating in, so they not only learn something new but also have a lot of fun. It also allows me to watch my other kids recruit their friends in volunteering for these sports and sharing their time and talent, which to me is a win-win. To date, Challenger Athletics serves over 350 athletes, over 500 buddies and promotes around 11 sports total. So we've really made an impact being a grassroots program born in my hometown.
