- Sound waves. I am sure you have heard that term before. And that's because sound exists only as waves that transmit through the air and get to our ears. To record analog sound waves as digital information, we need a digital converter and how this works is by turning those sound waves into samples. You could say that each sample is the equivalent of a pixel, you know, like in a picture, but much, much smaller. Each wave is recreated with these samples. But just like there is no way to recreate a curve using pixels because pixels are rectangular. There is no way to recreate a sound wave with these samples because the samples are distinct sounds. So, even though we can greatly approximate the curve of the wave, it cannot be perfect with current technology. So the smaller the sample, the better we can recreate the wave.
