About us

Wildlife Works is a community-centered wildlife conservation company that implements market-based initiatives to protect the planet’s threatened wilderness and endangered wildlife. The company was founded on the premise that if we want wildlife in our world, we have to make it work for local communities who share their environment. In partnership with forest communities, Wildlife Works’ conservation projects provide safe havens for endangered species while creating local jobs and reducing millions of tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually through the voluntary carbon market.

In rural Indonesia, where access to education is limited, a small reading club is making a big impact. 📚🌱 Funded by Wildlife Works and launched with the leadership of local education champion Husna, the club is not just boosting confidence in the classroom, it's inspiring a new generation to care for their environment. “We want our children to grow up smart, with a strong understanding of the value of education and the importance of caring for their environment,” says Husna, a volunteer tutor who has been instrumental in organizing the reading activities and encouraging children to learn beyond the classroom. Through donated books and mobile libraries, more children and parents alike are developing a love of learning, deepening their curiosities, and learning about the importance of protecting their world. This initiative is just the beginning of our commitment to the Gerbang Barito REDD+ project - one of many early project investments that are key to building trust and showing what’s possible when #carboncreditswork. • Yesterday, Kenya made history as the first African nation to launch a national REDD+ registry, establishing a centralized, transparent platform for tracking forest-related emissions reductions and the generation of carbon credits. Wildlife Works was honored to attend the launch and proud to have contributed to this historic milestone. The registry is a crucial step toward scaling the production of high-integrity REDD+ credits from Kenya, setting a strong precedent for other countries across the region. Wildlife Works played a key role in the registry’s development. As a member of the Kenya Nesting Working Group, Our Climate Policy Director for Africa, Olivia Adhiambo Ojwando, contributed to the technical drafting of both the guidelines and the registry framework, sharing insights from the Kasigau Corridor REDD+ Project. • In 2023, Wildlife Works opened its São Paulo, Brasil office in response to the increasing demand from both Indigenous territories and clients for conservation projects in the country. We’re encouraged to report that much progress has been made in the last 2 years. In the Alto Rio Guamá Indigenous Territory (TIARG), in Pará, the Tembé people have just launched their Consultation Protocol, marking a significant step in the collective development of their REDD+ project. Created by the Tembé people with technical support from the NGO Trópiko em Movimento (UFPA), the Protocol is a vital tool to ensure that any initiative on their land respects the right to Free, Prior, and Informed Consultation, as established by Convention 169 of the International Labour Organization (ILO). The launch ceremony brought together chiefs, community leaders, public agency representatives, and partner organizations. At Wildlife Works, we co-develop REDD+ projects with integrity and a commitment to lasting impact. This process, initiated in response to the chiefs’ requests, has strengthened governance in the territory by formalizing associations and encouraging collaboration among leaders who were previously working in isolation. For us, collective development and community leadership  are foundational pillars of conservation and local economic growth. "The Consultation Protocol strengthens us because it gives us a voice. It allows us to express our thoughts, our feelings, and how we believe things should be done. It adds value, because having the Protocol is essential. It is through this that we build mutual understanding with people from outside," says Diana Tembé, from Frasqueira village. #Brazil #VoluntaryCarbonMarket #REDDplus #IndigenousLeadership

  • “For someone who does not know, they might think that these are just ordinary houses, but for us, we see them as an opportunity to save lives” At the Kasigau Corridor REDD+ Project, the construction of staff housing at a rural health center is ensuring medical professionals can stay on-site, meaning faster care and safer outcomes for mothers, newborns, and emergency patients. This initiative shows that when carbon revenue meets community priorities, lives are saved. #ClimateAction #HealthEquity #CarbonCredits #REDDplus #WildlifeWorks #CommunityImpact

  • Nature holds many secrets key to solving the climate crisis. This month, we’ve been reflecting on this seemingly simple truth: many things are so much more than they first appear. Take the humble sunflower. What appears at first to be one flower is actually the aggregate of hundreds of smaller flowers. This phenomenon, known in botany as inflorescence, is also key to successful climate solutions. What may appear at first as just a “carbon project” can actually be so much more. High quality REDD+ projects are wildlife conservation projects, food security programs, incubators for sustainable new jobs, and mechanisms to strengthen community land tenure and governance systems. Due to the interconnected nature of the climate crisis, we need to have interconnected, inflorescent solutions. In this issue of Reasons for Wild Hope, learn about how REDD+ projects are strengthening community resilience to floods, improving healthcare, and protecting endangered biodiversity, all by flipping the paradigm and making conservation profitable for local communities. #ReasonsforWildHope #REDDplus #voluntarycarbonmarket #communityconservation
