Check out the professional learning and collegiality opportunities happening over the summer! #WeAreWCSD #WCSDProud
Had a great week of professional learning and collegiality at this year’s NV ACTE summer conference at Lake Tahoe. One of my main takeaways was from the keynote speaker Mark C. Perna, who talks about the importance of guiding students toward their “for now” job, or their “for now” career. When we look at postsecondary pathways, for me the temptation is to want to connect students with a really big career - the old question of “what do you want to be when you grow up?” And for our students and most of us as adults, that’s like a 20- or a 30-year question when our kids want and need something much smaller in scope connected to how they might want to live in their early 20s and incrementally from there. I want to hold on to this thought in my practice because I think it could powerfully shape how we serve our students in those critical years of middle and high school. Shout outs to all the other speakers who left me with ah-hah moments, including Ryan Cordia, Ed.D. who talked about his school’s work with Career Trees, Matt MacKay and Carisalynn Stratton who overviewed their collaboration between education and the skilled trades, Roni Green , Kyle Cassinelli , and Jill Manit, Ph.D., MSW who mapped out their work to build a pipeline for students into Nevada’s human and social services industry, and Dr. Stepan Mekhitarian who provided an overview of the financial literacy curriculum and tools available for free via Intuit. Congrats once again to Matt MacKay for his Lifetime Achievement award, and our own Josh Berreman for winning New Teacher of the Year! Many thanks to the NV ACTE board for putting together a great conference and lineup this year, and to my colleagues in WCSD and other districts this year with whom I was able to connect! #wearewcsd , #professionaldevelopment , Candi Robles , Cindi Chang , Tristan Hays , Denise Burton , Kristina Carey , Adam Shoda , Tina Statucki , Jim Gianotti , Heather Steel , Kimberly (Kimm) Rombardo , Anna Reynolds , Amber Burroughs , Crystal Edwards M.Ed.

Today, the Washoe County District Attorney’s Office, Washoe County School District, and WCSD School Police held a press conference to address the charges stemming from the vandalism at Reno High School. 🎥 Watch the full press conference here: https://xmrrwallet.com/cmx.ploom.ly/p0JYT4Y WCSD Board President Beth Smith and Superintendent Joe Ernst have also released official statements in response to today’s announcement. Their messages reflect the seriousness of the event, the value of accountability, and the district’s ongoing commitment to maintaining safe, respectful learning environments. Statement from Beth Smith, President of the WCSD Board of Trustees: “Today’s announcement brings a sense of closure to a deeply upsetting event that affected Reno High School, the Washoe County School District and the entire community. The crimes that that occurred weren’t just property damage—they were an attack on a place that means so much to students, staff, families, and alumni. We are grateful to our WCSD School Police and District leadership for working quickly and thoroughly to identify those responsible. At the Washoe County School District, we believe strongly in accountability—but we also believe in growth and learning. Our hope is that those involved will use this as an opportunity to reflect, take responsibility, and ultimately make better choices in the future.” Statement from Superintendent Joe Ernst: “Today’s announcement from the District Attorney is an important step. We are glad to see those involved in the incident at Reno High School being held accountable through the legal system. The school district also took disciplinary action based on each individual’s level of involvement, and together, we’re making it clear: this kind of behavior has real consequences. What happened was disturbing and deeply disappointing. It’s been hard on students, families, and staff—especially at Reno High. But I want to be clear: this does not represent who we are as a school district, or what we stand for. I am grateful to our WCSD School Police and to DA Chris Hicks and his office for the time and care they put into this investigation and the pursuit of justice. It was not easy work, and it was done right. We will continue doing everything we can to make sure our schools are safe, respectful places where all students can learn and feel safe, supported, and respected.”
