This summer, teens volunteered at TMC through the Auxiliary Youth Leadership program. Reminiscent of candy striper volunteers, high schoolers engaged in support services such as assisting patients in waiting areas or folding linens. The program offers a deeper understanding of possible roles in healthcare while giving the volunteers an opportunity to give back to the community. Jennifer Mendrzycki, TMC Health President and CEO, was once a candy striper herself and recognizes the program's value, "Now, this program is really about, how do we start to build that next level of leadership in our community? Thanks to partnerships with Pima JTED as well as the Mel and Enid Zuckerman Center for Health and Medical Careers, TMC Health and the TMC Health Foundation have been able to support hands-on training, real-world hospital experience, and industry-recognized certifications to high school students across Southern Arizona. The TMC Health Simulation Laboratory is designed to help students seeking medical careers develop their skills and confidence. This program offers immersive experiences, giving students the opportunity to better understand what healthcare professions are out there. Similarly, Northern Cochise Community Hospital offers programs such as Introduction to Medical Professions and a Patient Care Technician (PCT) class. Offering these programs across the TMC Health system fosters community connection, engagement and education among high school students and young adults. We're proud to share that Josh Lee, MD. Senior Vice President and CIO for TMC Health, has been recognized by Becker's Hospital Review in their 2025, "148 Hospital and Health System CIOs to Know." TMC Health strives to support and improve community health on a daily basis. Taking part in the federal 340B program— which provides discounted medications to hospitals caring for high volumes of financially vulnerable patients—is just one of the ways TMC Health works to make sure the community is taken care of. The 340B program reinvests saved funds into the community through initiatives, such as the addition of nurse practitioners to support newly diagnosed diabetes patients and even providing 30-day supplies of insulin at no cost to those unable to afford it. "These savings directly support TMC Health's charity care initiatives and fund vital community outreach programs, " said Claudia Koreny, Director of TMC Pharmacy.
