  • Hi, my name is Natalie, and I am working as a State Government Intern with the Department of Transportation in the Roadside Vegetation Management program! My summer project is to document invasive and beneficial plant species alongside the interstate, ranging from Topsham to Hampden. In doing this, it helps our team understand where pesticide applications need to take place (how we tackle pesky invasive plants!), as well as understand pollinator habitats for species such as the Monarch Butterfly. The ultimate goal is to become a partner of the Right of Way Habitat Working Group for Monarchs. This job is about 70% “in the field”, and the rest is spent in an office organizing data and photos. I spend most mornings on the road, stopping on exit & entrance ramps to collect data. I head into the office after that, organizing my plot data and uploading pictures. I usually head home around 4:30 pm! I am SO grateful for the State of Maine & the Margaret Chase Smith Policy Center for this opportunity! Every plant is important to understand & document when it comes to pollinator habitats & pretty roadsides! I have learned so much this summer.

Hi! My name’s Devlin, and I’m a Human Resources Intern through the Margaret Chase Smith Policy Center and Maine Government Summer Internship Program this summer - you might have seen a lot of my posts recently as I am one of a few people creating and sharing our job postings and general recruitment posts on this page! No day in my internship looks exactly the same, which is my favorite part of this role, but this is a peek into a day where I got to be out and about around the State House! On this day, I spent a lot of time making content for our social media (head back to the post on July 9th to see the post I’m working on in the first part of the video) and then in the afternoon I filmed background videos for some informational content I'm helping create to share internally, on an important program! Other days, I spend hours researching various topics for some projects I got to join in on; meeting with other interns to create posts highlighting their roles; and joining meetings on topics that interest me in various parts of HR! I have done so much work with an amazing group of people on a huge variety of topics, all of which relate to my academic fields in one way or another. I'm already using the skills I've learned this summer outside of work, and I know this experience will impact how I enter the workforce later! Encouraging people to apply for positions with the State of Maine might be part of my job, but it's also something I recommend to anyone and everyone outside of this role. That’s because there really is something for everyone in the Maine State Government. You'll see just a snippet of that in the next few days of posts highlighting a few of our other interns' roles this summer! Come back tomorrow for more! #InternDay #JobsInME #DayInTheLife #Intern
