One of the most visionary academic leaders in the Midwest, Chicago State University (CSU) President Z Scott, JD, and her team have just unveiled an ambitious and forward-looking plan: the creation of “University Village 95” adjacent to the CSU campus. This transformative initiative aims to foster a vibrant college-town atmosphere with new housing, restaurants, and retail, including over 500 student beds and 25,000 square feet of commercial space alongside the 95 street corridor. President Z Scott, JD describes the project as creating a “new front door” to the campus. Board Chair Andrea Zopp emphasized its deep commitment to equitable development on Chicago’s South Side. CSU has issued an RFP in partnership with CBRE to identify the right development partners. This effort is especially important for driving future enrollment growth, as the university works to reverse decades of enrollment challenges. During my time at World Business Chicago, I came to deeply appreciate the critical role CSU plays in our city’s economic and civic life. This project reinforces and expands that impact. I was proud to be part of the 2023 announcement of the 95th Street corridor economic development plan, which helped lay the groundwork for this initiative. We tracked at least 77 portfolio companies of Tan's VC firm, Walden International. More than half are in the semiconductor industry. Three are on a U.S. trade blacklist. "These investments in China are going to be a liability," Jimmy Goodrich, senior advisor for technology analysis to the RAND Corporation, told us.
