National Endangered Species Day: Spotlight on the Red Wolf (Canis rufus) Today we observe National Endangered Species Day, a moment to recognize the urgent need to protect vulnerable wildlife. Among the most critically endangered mammals in North America is the red wolf. Once native to the eastern and southern United States, Red Wolves now survive only in the wild in North Carolina. These medium-sized canids, smaller than grey wolves but larger than coyotes, are known for their reddish-grey coats and their ability to thrive in forests, swamps, and coastal prairies. Red wolves were declared extinct in the wild in 1980. In 1987, a pioneering reintroduction program brought them back to their natural habitat, but their population remains dangerously low. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) currently classifies the species as critically endangered, with only 20 to 30 mature individuals remaining in the wild. They face serious challenges including hybridisation with coyotes, habitat loss, and illegal killings, particularly in areas where conflicts arise with landowners. On this important day, we reaffirm the importance of protecting all endangered species and the ecosystems that sustain them.

Adam Black and Kerri Smith with Sphere 3 Environmental attended the 43rd annual Texas Aviation Conference in Denton, Texas last week. We had a great time visiting with existing aviation clients and getting a chance to speak with so many representatives from airports across the great state of Texas.

We are excited to announce that Tamie Bay has joined Sphere3 as a Safety Specialist/Environmental Consultant. Tamie brings an impressive background in health, safety, and environmental leadership with over two decades of experience spanning industrial construction, higher education, drilling operations, and even wildland firefighting. She holds both a Bachelor's and Master’s in Occupational Health and Safety from Columbia Southern University, and she’s on track to receive her Certified Safety Professional designation in Spring 2025! Most recently, Tamie served as QHSE District Manager where she led safety operations across four states and mentored teams through safety initiatives, audits, and incident investigations. Her certifications (including OSHA 30, Forklift & Manlift Train-the-Trainer, and First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor) and experience in program development, training, and compliance make her a great fit for this role!
