    You might have the perfect resume... but if you go into an interview and can’t clearly articulate why you want that job, you might still lose it. I recently had a candidate interview with a client for an FP&A role at a portfolio company, and the reason that they passed on him, despite a fully aligned background, is that he did not have a clear-cut answer as to why the role was interesting to him and why he was a great fit. One of the most overlooked parts of private equity interview prep is being prepared to answer the “why” questions: - Why do you want this job? - Why do you like the company? - Why are you looking to transition from your current role? - Why are you seeking to relocate? - Why do you want to make the switch from investment banking to the buy-side? These aren’t filler or throwaway questions. They’re often what separates candidates who move forward from those who don’t. We’ve seen even the strongest resumes fall short when candidates weren’t prepared with clear, thoughtful answers to these questions. Preparation is everything when it comes to the interview process. We do our best to thoroughly prepare candidates for their interviews prior to meeting with the client. But true preparation has to come from you. If you want the job, put in the work ahead of time, practice with yourself on Zoom, and be prepared to clearly express why you’re a great fit. You don’t need a perfect answer. But you do need a thoughtful one that is truthful, clear, and confident. And if you’re not sure how to frame it? Ask your recruiter for help. That’s what we’re here for.     Your communication to candidates says everything about your culture... I always advise clients that clear and thoughtful communication throughout the hiring process is critical. It reflects your values, your respect for candidates’ time, and how your team operates under pressure. Candidates notice and they remember. Collegial communication is also strategic as it helps you recruit and close the very best talent. More importantly, top candidates are rarely evaluating just one opportunity. They juggle multiple conversations and compare every interaction. The professionalism, clarity, and thoughtfulness of your communication influence their decision about where they want to work. Take a look at these two messages: 1️⃣ “Good morning. I apologize for the change, but an important investor meeting has come up that I need to attend. I’ll need to reschedule our interview. Please find some updated availability below, and I want to reassure you that this change will not impact your candidacy." 2️⃣ ”I need to move this meeting.” Both communicate the same information, but the tone could not be more different. The second message feels abrupt and indifferent. The first feels respectful, transparent, and reassuring, qualities that go a long way. When you communicate like the first message, you show candidates that you respect their time and value professionalism. This leaves a positive impression and reinforces a culture of respect and consideration. In recruiting, communication is more than coordination. It is a reflection of your brand and your culture.     We've been getting this question a lot lately from candidates at all levels: What should I wear to a Private Equity interview? With dress codes evolving and most offices leaning more casual these days, it's a fair question, and an important one. My take: You don’t need to wear a tie, but you should still put your best foot forward. Even though it’s uncommon to see people in full suits on a daily basis, a Private Equity interview is still a professional moment worth showing up for. The goal is to make sure the interviewer remembers you, not your outfit. My go-to recommendation: ✔️ For men: A button-down shirt with a well-fitted jacket. Skip the tie. The jacket adds polish and shows respect for the opportunity. ✔️ For women: Tailored blazers, straight-leg trousers, or midi-length dresses or skirts in solid, neutral colors. Keep it clean, formal, and professional. You want to look put together without being flashy. Formal but not stuffy. When in doubt, play it safe and err slightly on the formal side. It's always better to be slightly overdressed than underprepared. And if you're ever unsure, just ask your recruiter!
