  • New legislation from Maine makes audiovisual and audio content taxable. Here's what is included. Maine's House Paper 132 was signed by the Governor in June, but tax professionals are still figuring out what it means for their business. These changes are effective on January 1, 2026, expanding sales tax laws to include specific digital services. Here are the definitions the law changes: 📺 Digital Audiovisual Works: electronically transferred series of related images intended to be shown with sound. Examples include movies, TV shows, or live streamed video. 🎧 Digital Audio Works: electronically transferred sound recordings. Examples include music, readings of books, or podcasts. As consumer trends shift away from physically transfered materials to electronically transferred materials, states want a piece of the revenue. • The state of Washington reacted to Diane Yetter’s request to create programs helping remote sellers come into compliance. Here's how: Diane Yetter has spoken about how states should be looking at ways to help remote sellers come into compliance without putting them out of business. At the MTC Annual Meeting, Washington announced a beneficial program for foreign remote sellers. Early in 2026, a special VDA program which will limit the lookback period to 1 year with no penalties or interest will be available for a limited time. The state has not released many details yet.  Diane Yetter spoke to Bloomberg Tax on what foreign sellers need to do: https://xmrrwallet.com/cmx.plnkd.in/gWjDQbZ6 #Washington #TaxNews

  • Sales tax holidays: it's the most wonderful time of the year! Whether you're mourning or celebrating the back to school season, there's one thing August means for tax professionals: holidays. Read this article for insight into this trend... and to find out which states are providing these valuable (and occasionally frustrating) opportunities! #SalesTaxHoliday #TaxHoliday #TaxFree

  • Alabama's new law allows local governments to opt out of new sales tax exemptions. Here's why this matters… Alabama HB191 is the perfect example of an intricacy that tax professionals need to grasp: the important difference between state and local taxes. The law states that a sales and use tax exemption will only apply automatically to the state-level sales and use tax, unless explicitly stated. This law creates a process for localities to opt-out by passing an ordinance or a resolution and notifying the Alabama Department of Revenue by the July 1 before the resolution goes into effect. Oftentimes in SALT, tax professionals may overemphasize the S and deemphasize the L. This law shows why you should be paying close attention to local taxes while working with sales and use tax. If jurisdictions have opted out of certain exemptions, your power lies in knowing about these changes and incorporating them into your compliance.
