The Blue Economy offers a range of transformative opportunities for coastal communities in the Western Indian Ocean (WIO)—spanning social, economic, and environmental benefits. At the ongoing Madagascar Blue Economy Entrepreneurship Bootcamp, trainees visited Etablissment Mananjara, a marine-product processing factory in Diego-Suarez, Antsiranana, where they learned firsthand, about a large-scale processing enterprise. Sharing lessons learned the trainees commented: ✅ They don’t take small crabs. The crabs they process must be at least 11 cm meaning they are protecting the environment by not killing small crabs. ✅ I noticed the packaging. The products are well processed and packaged ready for the customers. ✅They value the community- they buy the products at a fair price ✅The visit really opened my eyes. I learned that no matter what the challenges, if I focus on my work, I can also set up such a business. The ReSea Project, with the support of Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada, is working with women and youth in the Blue Economy in Antsiranana to increase access to blue business opportunities by addressing barriers to entry and offering tailored business development support for business growth and scalability. #ReSeaProject #ReseaBootcampMadagascar #BlueEconomy #GenderEquality #WomenintheBlueEconomy #GreatBlueWall Mission inclusion, IUCN Eastern and Southern Africa, OceanHub Africa, The Great Blue Wall, Holy ratsimanoroarisoa, Sariaka Nantenaina, Felina Joséphine DAMENA, Andréanne Martel, Geneviève Gauthier, Magdalyne Were, Coline Camier, Perpetua A., Naomi Maina, Audrey Masitsa, MPRSK, Noor Jehan Docrat, Aristide Barthelemy RAVELONIRINA, Zo Andriamahenina, TIANARISOA Tantely

The ReSea Project team in Mozambique joined government institutions, local partners and community members in a series of community, educational, and environmental activities across the districts of Inhassoro and Vilankulo in Inhambane province, to mark the International Day for the Conservation of Mangrove Ecosystems. Led by IUCN Eastern and Southern Africa’s Bilardo Nharreluga and Temoteo Mucavele, and Muleide’s Guimaraes Mutumane, Isabel Chitolo and Hortencia Rafael da Conceição, the commemorations began on the eve of World Mangrove Day, July 25, with a public reading of an educational message to community members at Heroes' Square in Inhassoro District. On World Mangrove Day itself, July 26, a restoration and cleanup activity took place in the community of Mangalice, Vilankulo. The initiative saw the participation of community members, fishers, representatives from local partners WWF, CI, ParCo, AJUPADEC, COOAAV, local government authorities (SDAE, Municipality, Lake Police, SDPI). 121 kg of waste were collected, a visible testament to the impact of pollution on coastal ecosystems. Mangrove seedlings were planted, directly contributing to the recovery of these vital areas. Additionally presentation of plays on the theme by the ladies of the community, poetry and speeches on the occasion. Additionally, environmental awareness spots were broadcast on community radio stations in Vilankulo and Inhassoro. These were in an effort to raise awareness on the importance of mangroves and best practices for their conservation. #WorldMangroveDay #MangrovesandPeople #ReSeaProject #NatureBasedSolutions #GreatBlueWall #Mozambique Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada, High Commission of Canada in Mozambique | Haut-commissariat du Canada au Mozambique, IUCN Eastern and Southern Africa, Mission inclusion, The Great Blue Wall, Denise Nicolau, Magdalyne Were, Andréanne Martel, Perpetua A., Naomi Maina, Audrey Masitsa, MPRSK

In Comoros, mangroves support local fisheries and provide essential livelihoods, particularly for women and youth involved in fishing, eco-tourism, and traditional practices. They also play a vital role as the first line of defence against coastal erosion, rising sea levels, and extreme weather events, helping to protect vulnerable island communities and preserve biodiversity. Nevertheless, these ecosystems face mounting threats from overharvesting, land conversion, pollution, and the impacts of climate change. The ReSea Project, with the support of Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada, is working with the Government of Comoros, Moheli National Park, local communities and other partners to conserve, protect and restore this vital ecosystem, championing women and youth as agents of change, stewards of nature and leaders in sustainable blue economies. As we celebrate the International Day for the Conservation of Mangroves, we call upon governments, civil society, and the private sector to accelerate and scale up investments in locally driven, inclusive solutions that protect mangroves and the communities that depend on them. We’re honoured to be taking part in the International Learning Symposium on Mangrove Ecosystems, Senegal this week. Harilala Rakotonaivo, Coordinator at Women’s Rights Organisation Capacity-building for Communities (C for C) working on the ReSea Project in Madagascar, joined other delegates for a multi-stakeholder dialogue aimed at enhancing local knowledge, disseminating innovations and promoting sustainable solutions in the conservation and restoration of mangroves. During her presentation on the ReSea Project, Harilala showcased ReSea’s unique approach that puts gender and women’s rights at the forefront of governance of marine and coastal ecosystems including mangroves. We’re also working to enhance their access to blue economy opportunities. As part of our efforts to centralise gender, we are carrying out various actions that seek to put women and youth voices at the forefront while enhancing their agency. These include awareness-raising on women’s rights, increased involvement of women in marine value chains and representation of women and youth in marine governance structures. “Making equality a priority is essential—not only for reasons of effectiveness and sustainability, but also for social justice,” Harilala stressed. “We appreciate what you are doing in Madagascar. It gives us strength and encourages us to promote inclusion within our association in Senegal,” one of the participants remarked. #WorldMangroveDay #MangrovesandPeople #ReSeaProject #NatureBasedSolutions #GreatBlueWall, #NAbSA #PartneringforClimate Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada, Mission inclusion, IUCN Eastern and Southern Africa, The Great Blue Wall, Socodevi - Société de coopération pour le développement international, Sariaka Nantenaina, Andréanne Martel, Perpetua A., Holy ratsimanoroarisoa, Coline Camier, Magdalyne Were
