After serving for just over 20 years, John Archer is nearing the end of his US Navy career and looking toward the future here at Newport News Shipbuilding. He’s currently an intern at NNS through the company’s partnership with Skillbridge. The United States Department of Defense program is designed to help service members who have 180 days or less before military discharge navigate civilian work life. Veterans who become shipbuilders bring a deep connection to our mission and a unique set of skills and experiences. We're grateful to John for his service and for his willingness to continue serving our nation as a shipbuilder. Read more: https://xmrrwallet.com/cmx.plnkd.in/dnm5njvj

About us
For 137 years, the ships built at Newport News Shipbuilding, like the American shipbuilders who built them, have served our nation in peace and war, in times of adversity and in times of abundance. Our legacy of “Always Good Ships,” includes the design, construction, overhaul and repair of more than 800 ships for the U.S. Navy and commercial customers. Today, Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of HII, is the nation’s sole designer, builder and refueler of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and one of only two shipyards capable of designing and building nuclear- powered submarines. We also provide fleet services for naval ships. We are the largest industrial employer in Virginia, employing more than 25,000 people, many of whom are third- and fourth-generation shipbuilders.

Gwennie Furr is a relatively new shipbuilder, but she’s passionate about making a difference here at Newport News Shipbuilding. Gwennie Furr Software Engineer One year at NNS “I strive to use computers to help people make their lives more efficient. Previously, I worked on Navy, NASA and 911 projects. My group works with automated controls, and I have seen firsthand how these controllers work for both aircraft carrier and submarine-related systems. Having an active duty Navy family member makes my shipyard job meaningful. I'm also an engagement champion for my engineering division, and I enjoy opportunities to build relationships and strengthen our shipyard from within.”

Newport News shipbuilder Kyle Cooke is a decorated martial artist. Born with macular degeneration, an eye disease that causes vision loss, he’s faced adversity throughout his life. However, Kyle – a sheet metal worker at NNS – hasn’t let his visual impairment prevent him from succeeding in the shipyard or in competition. He competes in para-elite kata, a division for individuals with disabilities who can compete at a very high level. He recently won the gold medal for his division, becoming the top competitor across the United States, Mexico and Canada. Later this year, he plans to compete in Cairo, Egypt. Join us in congratulating Kyle on his accomplishments and wishing him well in his upcoming competitions! Read more here: https://xmrrwallet.com/cmx.plnkd.in/erfa8-_e

Read below to find out what motivates Grant Strother – a Newport News Shipbuilding apprentice – to always do his best. Grant Strother Non-Destructive Testing Apprentice Three years at NNS “I don't give 50 or 60% to anything in life. If I'm going to do something, I'm giving it 100%, whether it's writing emails, doing homework or even playing video games. I'm trying to learn as much as I can and do the absolute best job possible. I've been filling in as make-up foreman for the past few weeks, locked in, and everything has been going smoothly. The next two rotations I have are Planning and Radiographic Testing. Then I'm done with my apprenticeship and graduating.”

This edition of Around the Yard at NNS illustrates how a shipbuilder idea can lead to greater efficiency at Newport News Shipbuilding. Watch this video to learn how this simple change is positively impacting work on the nation’s newest aircraft carriers – Enterprise (#CVN80) and Doris Miller (#CVN81). If you’re an NNS shipbuilder, watch this video until the end to find out how you can submit your own ideas via our new MyIdea program. The voices of all shipbuilders matter, and it’s important that we all take ownership and work to remove barriers to success.

Brenda Ponce is proud to support fellow Newport News shipbuilders by providing the tools they need to do their important work. Brenda Ponce Tool Mechanic Five years at NNS “I love the people. Everyone has a different personality, and it makes the world go around. We can laugh together, and I think you get better quality work because people are enjoying their jobs and each other. I'm so proud to be helping other shipbuilders do their jobs. They need these tools on the deck plate, and I make sure that the tool quality is good. I want every tool to feel new when they use them.”

Ric Paquette is wrapping up a nearly five-decade career as a Newport News shipbuilder. He encourages others to strive to learn as much as they can from fellow shipbuilders. Ric Paquette Facilities Planner 48 years at NNS “When I was hired as a shipfitter in 1978, I never imagined I would have the opportunities I have had. My Dad worked here, and his words of advice to me were 'When asked to do something new, never say no.' I have worked with my tools, become an instructor, supported operations at the Savannah River and Kesselring sites, and worked many christenings and other special events. But the most enjoyable thing is the many great friendships I have here. Working with so many different folks has been remarkable. I could never have been successful in my career without them.”
