About us

The National Association of Medicaid Directors (NAMD) began as an independent, bipartisan, nonprofit, professional organization in 2011. Medicaid directors previously were represented as part of a larger umbrella group of agencies under the American Public Human Services Association, known as the National Association of State Medicaid Directors (NASMD). In 2010, state Medicaid directors voted unanimously to reincorporate as a separate group. Despite NAMD’s young history, Medicaid and state Medicaid directors have existed since 1965. NAMD represents members who oversee Medicaid in each of the 50 states, District of Columbia and U.S. territories. Medicaid directors are the senior leaders in states driving major innovations in health care while overseeing Medicaid, one of the nation’s most vital – and complex – health care safety net programs, which covers more than 72 million Americans. Medicaid directors work tirelessly to provide the best possible health care to vulnerable Americans while being responsible stewards of taxpayer dollars.

  • Medicaid Meets Public Health: A Blueprint for Collaboration Medicaid and public health agencies serve many overlapping populations and have similar goals, but traditionally operate in separate lanes. There are many opportunities for Medicaid and public health programs to align efforts and collectively address gaps in care for the communities they serve, including in an environment of more constrained state and territory budgets. The solution isn't more meetings—it's strategic collaboration like ✅ Cross-sector training to build foundational understanding ✅ Joint strategic planning with designated champions ✅ Shared funding models that leverage Medicaid matching funds ✅ Data sharing agreements with clear governance structures ✅ Aligned evaluation metrics for both short and long-term impact When these agencies work together effectively, the impact is transformative: better health outcomes, stronger community trust, maximized resources, and more sustainable prevention programs. Ready to strengthen collaboration in your state? Download the National Association of Medicaid Directors comprehensive blueprint for actionable strategies that break down silos and build lasting partnerships between Medicaid and public health.

Executive Director of the National Association of Medicaid Directors

The OBBBA that was enacted last week includes significant changes to Medicaid that will require exactly the kind of active applied collaboration between state and territory programs and the Center for Medicaid & CHIP Services that has endured and flourished from the COVID public health emergency through unwinding and present day. NAMD represents and raises up the insight and lived experience of the 56 state and territory directors and also over 400 members of their senior teams who are part of our affinity groups for CFOs, eligibility leaders, CIOs, and public information officers. We partner with CMCS leadership including Drew Snyder, Caprice Knapp, PhD, Anne Marie Costello, Sara Vitolo and their remarkable colleagues. We are all here to serve the almost 80 million folks who are covered by Medicaid and CHIP. National Association of Medicaid Directors
