We recently honored 144 crew members and technicians as Safety Winners, Rising Stars, and Champions Club members for the second quarter at our Huntsville and Memphis branches. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are serious medical emergencies, and this week’s dangerously hot conditions with heat index values ranging from 105 to 115 degrees heighten the risk of heat-related illnesses. If you work outdoors or in non-air-conditioned spaces like we do, that means taking extra precautions. Our construction and maintenance crews stay safe in the heat by: · hydrating often, even when they’re not thirsty. · replacing electrolytes. · taking breaks in the shade or AC as often as needed. · wearing light-colored, breathable clothing and a hat to help block the sun. · knowing the signs (dizziness, headaches, confusion, cramps, nausea) · looking out for their coworkers and speaking up if someone needs help. Our Landscape Supervisors and Field Operations Managers also check on crews several times throughout the day, delivering extra water, making sure they’re taking precautions, and monitoring for signs of heat stress. Why?
