CodaMetrix’s Hamid Tabatabaie On The Power of Good Ideas Hamid Tabatabaie knows the power of big ideas. In 1986, he wrote a memo to the Chief Executive Officer of a “huge” company with whom he was frustrated after the CEO had pledged that his company “didn’t verticalize.” Intending to show it to a colleague, he sent it to the entire company instead. Mortified, he drove to the CEO’s office and asked for it to be deleted, but it was too late: The message had been received, read, and, shortly thereafter, approved. “What I learned from that experience is that if you have a great idea that’s well-supported and well-articulated, don’t keep it to yourself,” he said in a 2024 interview. “Make the case. And make it more than once if that’s what’s required.” As a CEO himself – of medical coding company CodaMetrix – Tabatabaie is now the one taking the messages, and making the hard calls. The Boston-based executive, who’s been in the role since 2018, is helping his company turn “notoriously unreliable medical codes into highly dependable clinical information.” Nowadays, that means Artificial Intelligence, but, he stresses, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution in healthcare. Far from it, in fact. “In reality, you really need to send your machine and AI system to medical school for every specialty,” he said. “An AI system needs to learn radiology from radiology experts and surgery from surgical experts and so it goes for every other specialty and subspecialty. AI requires a significant corpus of data to train models, and these must be handpicked by human beings.” Tabatabaie says AI coding isn’t going to replace medical professionals; there’s simply too much work needed for it to happen. Noting that his doctors spend a good deal of time looking at a computer during his visits, Tabatabaie says coding can speed up the process. “If a surgeon can rely on the codes, they can use them to submit information to a national surgical registry that keeps track of how a certain knee replacement works or which heart surgery technique has a lower risk of infection for a particular patient,” he said. In other words, just like Tabatabaie and the CEO to whom he sent an email by accident so many years ago, doctors likely don’t care where good ideas come from, as long as they get them. With CodaMetrix, they’re coming in faster than ever.
