#79 – Salary Woes What are you worth? Now isn’t that an ambivalent question. Salary negotiations are the sweat and tears of many an interview, promotion, and performance review. I was into my own salary negotiation not too long ago. And the discussion gave me pause – for me, what matters most? Am I considering all of the benefits? How does this role fit into my current lifestyle versus the alternatives? You may find, even legitimate reasons to ask for more $$ can land flat with your potential benefactor: • “What about inflation?” -> Sure, here’s a tiny bump in comparison… • “But I do the work of 2 employees.” -> Work a bit longer… maybe much longer… • “Isn’t that the lower side of the job’s posted range?” -> Why should we pay you more? Welcome to the world of salary negotiations. Fortunately, pay transparency is on the rise. Legislation, or voluntary adherence are the current pay equity trends. Despite this growing advantage, you may still feel your pay is inadequate and want to bump it up. Before you jump into a discussion with HR, here are 5 pro salary negotiation tips from Senior Recruiter, Christyne Gonzalez Hamilton: 1. Do Your Homework: research salary ranges for the role; understand the full compensation package – base salary, bonuses, benefits, perks etc. Don’t just look at the job title for salary comparisons; consider also companies of similar size and scale. 2. Don’t Bring it Up too Soon: if it’s an interview, avoid being the first to name a number. Let the employer express their range first – which puts you in a stronger negotiating position to demonstrate your value on the high end. 3. Frame the Ask Around Value: lead with your impact – not just your expectations. State your results and how the efforts of your outcomes will benefit their bottom line. Formula is: Your impact -> Their gain -> Your ask. 4. Stay Professional, not Personal: avoid emotional negotiations – refrain from using personal expenses as the reason to push the change. Keep focused on professional merit, market value, and what you bring to the table. 5. Be Ready for the Back-and-Forth: Most negotiations are give-and-take. Be clear about what’s non-negotiable and where you are flexible. Consider a trade on base salary for other benefits like: - Extra PTO - Remote work flexibility - Signing bonus - Title upgrade or faster performance review cycle To reiterate - recognize the value you offer – if your skills and experience align, fair market value or greater should be within your reach. A successful salary negotiation can set the tone for how you are perceived and valued in your new or current role. So don’t live with salary woes – know your worth and engage at the right intervals.
