Steel manufacturing is one of the most carbon-intensive industries globally. Now, experts have created a fossil-free process. Boston Metal's new method eliminates fossil fuels from the process entirely — and their emissions are clean enough to vent next to a daycare. Instead of using coal or natural gas to refine iron, the compnay employs molten oxide electrolysis—an electrified method that produces only oxygen as a byproduct. With a $400 million backing from major players including ArcelorMittal and Breakthrough Energy Ventures, the company is preparing to generate its first revenue by extracting high-value niobium from mining waste, a stepping stone to full-scale green steel production. While the U.S. green steel sector faces political uncertainty and reduced federal support under the Trump administration, Boston Metal’s independence from government funding gives it a rare advantage. Its pilot facility in Brazil is set to go online this year, and a commercial steel demonstration plant is planned by 2028. As the company aims to license its technology globally, experts say the demand for low-emissions steel is growing—even if the supply side still faces challenges. Boston Metal's emissions-free process could mark a turning point in an industry responsible for nearly 10% of global carbon pollution.
