About us
As a not-for-profit community health system, Benefis is driven to provide the highest level of care. We serve nearly 230,000 residents across a 15-county region that is bigger than Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont combined. Benefis is the largest non-governmental employer in the Great Falls area, with more than 3,000 employees. Benefis Hospitals has more than 530 beds at its two campuses (that includes 146 beds in long-term care and 20 beds at Peace Hospice of Montana) and partners with over 250 area physicians. More than 100 physicians and advanced practice professionals are employed with Benefis Medical Group. Our hospital provides a wide range of programs and services to help you live the best life possible. We’re here to help you “Live well.” Benefis Health System came about when two Christian-based hospitals became one. Our founders' believed in providing good care to all in need, and trusted that this would be accomplished. The Benefis name was derived using Latin root words: "Bene-" meaning good, and "fis-" for faith and trust. It’s these same root words that make up such terms as ‘beneficial’ and ‘confidence’. Benefis has been a trusted provider of care for more than 100 years. And our name speaks to our commitment: good care one can put faith in. Benefis is consistently ranked among America’s top hospitals by the nation’s leading healthcare ratings organizations, including being rated as one of the 150 Great Places to Work in Healthcare!

After 15 years of dedicated service, Dr. Judy Borland is retiring from her role as Benefis Teton Medical Center's medical director at the end of June. Since joining the BTMC team in 2010, Dr. Borland has provided compassionate care to long-term care residents, guided our medical staff with steady leadership, and helped shape a strong team of advanced practice providers. Her commitment to our community and to rural medicine has been unwavering. While we will miss her deeply, we’re grateful she’ll remain in the area — and we know her influence will be felt at BTMC for years to come. Please join us in thanking Dr. Borland for her many years of service and in wishing her the very best in her next chapter!

Today we celebrate 133 years of compassion, innovation, and healing at Benefis Health System! Our story began in 1892 when five Catholic sisters arrived in Great Falls, answering a call for help from Father John J. Dols and local physicians. With the opening of the Columbus School of Nursing in 1894 and the founding of Montana Deaconess Hospital in 1898 by Protestant leaders like Brother Van, two proud legacies were born. For decades, Columbus and Deaconess hospitals stood as pillars of care, education, and community—shaped by generous donors, passionate caregivers, and a shared mission of service. On July 1, 1996, these two institutions came together to form Benefis, built on bene (good) and fis (faith and trust). Since then, we’ve expanded across Montana, enhanced our educational offerings, and remained a trusted partner in health for generations. As we honor our 133rd Founders Day, we reflect with pride on our past and look ahead with purpose—continuing our unwavering commitment to exceptional care for the communities we serve.
