This afternoon, BART Directors Janice Li and Edward Wright met with Assemblymember Catherine Stefani (D-San Francisco). They gave her an update on ridership recovery and rider satisfaction ratings as well as District initiatives like the Next Generation Fare Gates project. They discussed with the Assemblymember the importance of the loan for Bay Area transit agencies that was included in this year’s state budget as well as how we can help her, as a co-author of the bill, get Senate Bill (SB) 63 passed through the Legislature to keep BART serving our riders in the short and medium terms.

Have you see a BART car in the wild? People are always sending photos in from the road asking what is going on with these trains spotted on flatbed trucks around the U.S. Those cars are heading to BART’s Hayward Test Track by way of Plattsburgh, New York, where Alstom's manufacturing facilities are located. Once the cars are complete, Alstom puts them on a truck and ship them to our test track for final testing. Last week, the 1000th Fleet of the Future car completed its weekslong journey to the test track! Work is poised to begin on the installation of Next Generation Fare Gates at Balboa Park Station this Friday, August 8. The work will happen in stages so riders can continue to use the remaining gates while new ones are being installed. There will be additional BART staff as well as signage to direct riders to the open gates. There will also be a service gate available for those riders who would typically use an accessibility gate. The installation of each new set of gates is expected to take up to two weeks to complete. We now have the Next Generation Fare Gates at 46 stations across the system. All 50 BART stations will have new fare gates by the end of 2025.

Ever dream of working for BART, helping move people around the Bay Area? This summer, a group of BART interns developed an RPG video game that gives an educational, inside look at what it's like working for a transit agency! The prototype game is called Transiteers, and it allows you to step into the shoes of an intern to meet different BART employees. Through various mini games, you learn all about the work BART employees do, from cleaning stations to rebuilding track. We’ve included some screenshots from the game below, which the public will be able to play soon. The BART intern team that created Transiteers just won first place in the Introducing Youth to American Infrastructure (iyai+) Grand Innovation Challenge, competing against multiple North American transit agencies. Transiteers is a great example of meeting young people where they’re at in order to help foster the next generation of transit workers. It’s educational and fun, too! Congrats to Marl Jonson, Bhavya Anand, Aaron Chang, and Isaac Santillan for their great work on this game. The Transiteers team will continue their work on the final phase of development into the school year. We’ll share the link to play Transiteers when it’s ready for showtime!
