Spotlight on Kendra Smith, MSW, LSW Total Quality Management  Years of service: 4 On her calling to advocate: "I always wanted to work in healthcare, but I wasn't sure what that would look like for me. My grandfather inspired my path. When he could no longer speak for himself, I saw how important it was to have someone in your corner. Social work let me step into that role for others. That began with older adults in nursing homes, and now I carry that same mindset into mental health." 

Pink stood for courage as Ascension associates, leaders, and families gathered for Breast Cancer Awareness Night with the Schaumburg Boomers last week. As a Presenting Partner, Ascension Saint Alexius and Alexian Brothers honored survivors, supported awareness and united the community in a powerful show of strength and solidarity.

Spotlight on Rabbi Norman Lewison, Associate Chaplain, Ascension Saint Joseph –Chicago  Years of service: 38 On a lifelong commitment to service: “While I have a warm and close relationship with the Jewish community, I’ve always thought of myself as a support to all human beings. Someone came up to me just yesterday and said she’d spoken to me years ago. While she wasn’t Jewish, she told me that conversation helped her through something personal and stayed with her for years. It’s beautiful to hear that. So often we never know the impact we have.” 

Spotlight on Rina Yague, RN, Ascension Alexian Brothers Behavioral Health Hospital Years of service: 14 On meeting people where they are: "We serve patients from all walks of life, from young adults to people in their nineties. Depression shows up differently in each age group and I get to see all of that. I learn something new from each patient and I adapt as a nurse and a leader to meet their needs.”

We are deeply disappointed with the cuts to Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act in legislation known as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act that passed Congress today. This bill falls short of supporting individuals and families who are poor, vulnerable, or too often left out of important decisions in Washington, causing nearly 12 million to lose their health coverage. While we do not expect immediate operational changes, these cuts risk destabilizing the health care system, especially in rural and underserved areas. As a Catholic health ministry dedicated to serving all, we remain committed to advocating for those who may not have a voice in policy conversations. Our Mission has not changed.
