Glare is the silent killer of screen readability especially on OLED displays. But what if we could stop ambient light in its tracks with a smart optical film? Welcome to this week’s Tech Tip Tuesday, where we spotlight the antireflective circular polarizer - a highly effective way to improve outdoor OLED performance. Using Lumerical Sub-Wavelength Model (LSWM) and Ansys Speos, engineers can simulate how wave plates and polarizers work together to reduce glare and boost display clarity. The principle is based on polarization. Light reflected from metallic electrodes in an OLED stack retains a certain polarization unless we manipulate it. Enter the circular polarizer, composed of: ▶️ A linear polarizer ▶️ A half-wave plate (rotates the polarization) ▶️ A quarter-wave plate (converts to circular polarization) On return, the light becomes orthogonally polarized and blocked. To ensure realistic modeling: ✅ An artificial dielectric layer (n=1.5) is introduced ✅ Reflections are split into R1 and R2 ✅ Lumerical scripts calculate the adjusted reflectance ✅ Ansys Speos reads the exported .json to analyze behavior in real-world angles 👓 The result? A sharp reduction in R2, especially when the anisotropic material has an optimized Nz value (~0.5). Our tests at 550 nm wavelength show dramatic improvements in reflection suppression, especially across wider viewing angles. Whether you’re building next-gen mobile displays, wearable optics, or AR/VR environments, this technique is worth a closer look. Before your next OLED design cycle, simulate your antireflection strategy with Lumerical and SPEOS to enhance performance and reduce prototype iterations. Fundamental Fridays: Co-Packaged Optics 101 The rules of data center design are being rewritten—and at the center of this shift is Co-Packaged Optics (CPO). Why? Because traditional pluggable optics can no longer keep up with the explosive demands of AI/ML, cloud infrastructure, and high-performance computing. Let’s break it down 👇 What is CPO? CPO merges optical and electrical components within the same package. This tight integration reduces power, shortens signal paths, and improves bandwidth density—making it ideal for next-gen switches operating at 6.4T, 12.8T, and beyond. Why the shift? Pluggables are power-hungry at scale. They rely on lossy copper traces and require multiple DSPs to compensate for signal degradation—costing both energy and efficiency. In contrast, CPOs eliminate these inefficiencies by bringing the optics directly to the chip. What’s the payoff? ◾ Up to 50% reduction in power consumption ◾ Throughput exceeding 16 Tbps (Ayar Labs) ◾ Lower latency, higher reliability, smaller footprint This isn’t just better… it’s transformational. Where is CPO used? ◾ Front-end Ethernet networks in hyperscale data centers. ◾ Back-end AI fabrics enabled by Optical I/O (OIO). ◾ Disaggregated HPC architectures separating compute, memory, and storage. But scaling CPO isn’t without its challenges. ⚠️ Field serviceability ⚠️ Thermal crosstalk ⚠️ Fiber coupling complexity ⚠️ Manufacturing yield Solving these requires cross-discipline collaboration and robust simulation at every stage, from photonic circuit layout to package-level thermal modeling. This is where simulation plays a mission-critical role. Join us at Simulation World on July 16th where Fatema Rezwana Chowdhury Chowdry will give an overview of Ansys CPO Solutions, from theory to silicon. 📅 July 16 Overview of Ansys Co-Packaged Optics Solutions 🎙 Fatema Rezwana Chowdhury, Ansys Register for Simulation World today! https://ansys.me/44qcdWb Reference: What is Co-Packaged Optics https://ansys.me/465Yh54 #CoPackagedOptics #CPO #DataCenterDesign #SimulationWorld #Photonics
