Our new AI model AlphaEarth Foundations is mapping the planet in astonishing detail. 🌏🔍 The system’s public datasets will help scientists better plot and track planetary changes over time. This could include critical issues like water resources, deforestation, urban expansion, and more – in hours, instead of weeks or months. Organizations like the United Nations FAO, Group on Earth Observations and MapBiomas are already using it to create powerful custom maps and drive real-world insights. The annual embedding datasets from our model are available now in Google Earth Engine. AlphaEarth Foundations is a significant step forward in understanding our changing planet and we’re excited to see how it can accelerate work in vital mapping initiatives. 📣 Kicking off a new Sunday series on AI 📣 Each week, we’ll explore a critical AI theme, starting with the elephant in the room: 🧠 LLMs don’t actually reason. Despite the hype, large language models mimic reasoning through pattern recognition. That’s fine for writing and summarising, but nowhere near enough for real-world decisions in high-stakes fields like law, medicine, or finance. The cracks show when: • 🪜 Multi-step logic is required • 🪢 Facts contradict each other • ⁉️ The model must explain why, not just what The result? Fluent, confident nonsense. But there’s hope. We’re making progress through: ** Tool use + external memory (e.g., ReAct, RAG) ** Agentic workflows that chain calls across steps ** Fine-tuning on chain-of-thought and programmatic reasoning ** Embedding LLMs in environments with real feedback loops Fluency isn’t enough. To trust AI with critical decisions, it must reason, revise, and reflect. 💬 Where have you hit the limits of LLM reasoning? If you’re passionate about solving these problems, I highly recommend applying to the upcoming Global MIT AI Hackathon: a brilliant forum to bring your ideas to life (brought together by the incredible Linn Bieske & team. Link in comments). #SundayAISeries #AISeries #AI #AIReasoning #AGI #AISuperintelligence

  • Huge congratulations to Sokratis Papafloratos and the entire Numan team on this major milestone. A $60M round is more than funding — it’s a signal that patient-first, data-driven healthcare is gaining real traction. Proud to see Numan leading the way in reshaping the future of healthcare. #hellenictech

We’ve just closed a $60 million funding round to accelerate the future of proactive, patient-first healthcare. Led by Big Pi Ventures and Endeavor Catalyst - and joined by our long-time supporters White Star Capital and Novator - this round also includes $27M in growth capital from HSBC Innovation Banking UK, a key supporter of the UK’s leading healthtech innovators. This is a significant milestone that reflects the incredible work from everyone at Numan, the impact we’ve had on our patients’ lives, and the growing opportunity to change healthcare for the better - in the UK and beyond. Because this isn’t just about headline numbers. It’s about how we can continue to help people lead happier, healthier, longer lives - combining diagnostics, medication, expert care, and behavioural support into a personalised health journey that spans prevention and cure. The fact is Numan has evolved significantly over the past 18 months. We now serve both men and women. Obesity care has become a big part of our platform, and we’ve built a world-class, AI-powered health coach that is already delivering meaningful results. Pharma/biotech investing; strategy; health/wellness/longevity

A few weeks ago, I had the chance to speak at the Hellenic Tech Network on the Future of AI in HealthTech, joining a diverse panel of experts across medicine, medtech, and academia. I brought my perspective as both a consultant and equity researcher in pharma and biotech——to reflect on how AI is reshaping this space, focusing on three things. 1️⃣ The Big Picture: Macro, M&A & Innovation 📉 Pharma and biotech capital markets have been tumultuous in recent months—geopolitical pressures (e.g., tariffs, pricing debates) have shaken investor confidence (XBI index has been challenged for the past few years). But amid the noise, there are signs of opportunity: A potential de-regulation tailwind may unlock faster innovation, partially driven by AI operational efficiencies and AI use cases in scientific innovation. M&A activity is rebounding too, whilst cross-border deals—especially between US/EU companies and Chinese biotech (e.g., in oncology e.g. PDL1xVEGF) are accelerating 📌 Companies to watch: BioNTech, Pfizer, AZN 2️⃣ AI & Early Cancer Detection: Promise and Pitfalls 🕵 AI is powering next-gen cancer screening—pan-tumor, molecular diagnostic platforms are emerging fast. But scaling them responsibly remains a challenge: Even a 0.1% false positive rate could overwhelm healthcare systems and create patient anxiety. Feasibility, safety, and long-term outcome data will be key to unlocking wider adoption. 📌 Companies to watch: Grail, Guardant, Freenome 3️⃣ AI in Drug Discovery: Hype Meets Proof? 🤖 AI promises to cut drug development timelines and costs—and that’s core to pharma’s mission. We're seeing an explosion of in silico platforms across modalities (small molecules, antibodies, etc). However, clinical validation is still sparse, but could come soon, over the next few months as Phase 2/3 data from AI-discovered drugs reads out 📌 Companies to watch: Relay, Recursion and many more If successful, investor confidence in the AI-driven discovery may see a doubling down. 📩 Always happy to connect with others in the life sciences 🧬 . #AI #HealthTech #Biotech #Pharma #DrugDiscovery #HealthcareInnovation #LifeSciences #HealthTechInvestment #EarlyDetection #CapitalMarkets

Human Data @OpenAI | Ex Data Science @Stanford | Onassis Foundation Scholar

I’m thrilled to share that I’ve joined the Human Data team at OpenAI! After two years building learning software products for children at Age of Learning, I’m excited to help advance one of today’s most impactful products - ChatGPT. My career has always revolved around data, from data science to data engineering and data ops and I hope my data-centric view on AI will guide my work as we improve the quality, safety and usefulness of AI. A big thanks to the OpenAI team who believed in me. I couldn’t be more excited to work with you! (My personal threshold for AGI is when the model will spell my last name correctly on the first try. We’re not there yet.. but getting closer.)
