About the Project

Addressing Climate Challenges in Southern US National Parks

National parks in general—and specifically within the southern United States—are facing the need to upgrade water systems to account for increased extreme precipitation and flooding events. Efforts to address this issue, including a parkwide upgrade and redesign of water services, are underway in the Everglades. The National Park Service (NPS) required that climate change and its impacts be considered in the new design throughout the park.

Resilient Analytics served as the climate consultant in this effort, tasked with providing the design team with insights into the changing conditions that the water system would encounter over the next two decades. The team was required to meet the technical guidelines of the NPS, as well as determine additional climate concerns specific to the Everglades.

Resilient Analytics analyzed climate projections to obtain a perspective on the types of climate concerns specific to the Everglades, as well as the severity of the threats. The design team was particularly concerned about the potential for extreme precipitation events, which could lead to the failure of the water systems. The team provided analysis of both the standard NPS threats as well as additional design concerns.
