It might sound like something from a Cold War tech museum, but it’s true: many Boeing 747-400s still use 3.5-inch floppy disks to update their navigation databases. Each update takes up to a dozen disks, each holding just 1.44 MB. That’s less than a single photo on your phone. So why hasn’t this iconic jumbo jet moved on to USB, Wi-Fi, or cloud systems? If it ain't broke, don’t fix it. The floppy-based system is reliable, secure, and well-understood by technicians. Upgrading avionics means major recertification processes, millions in cost, and potential compatibility issues. Floppies offer one surprising advantage: they’re offline by nature, making them virtually immune to cyberattacks. While the 747’s design has evolved since its debut in 1969, the 747-400 (introduced in 1988) was built in an era when floppy disks were cutting-edge, and they’ve stuck around for good reason. 📦 Fun fact: even Chuck E. Cheese and the US Department of Defense used floppy disks well into the 21st century.
