A project that pushed both geometry and logistics. 🔧 We supported the site with a precisely coordinated formwork and scaffolding setup. Standard systems met custom-built components – all based on a digital 3D model and tailored to the structure's shape. In practice, large slab tables helped to maintain a steady construction rhythm, while single-sided wall formwork was used for the narrow building cores. Integrated safety features such as material catch screens and edge protection contributed to secure workflows. Right in the middle of Rio’s bay in Brazil, the Museum of Tomorrow stretches out over the water – a dedicated to exploring the future. 🛸 But how do you build something that looks like it’s from another world? 🤔 Just like the building reaches far beyond the shoreline, the planning also required solutions that went far beyond standard approaches. The future of scaffolding is here! It is called Genio. Genio is a mobile robot equipped with two robotic arms that can assemble scaffolding based on a digital plan created by the scaffolder. It makes scaffolding easier, safer and quicker, thereby not only improving the working environment for scaffolders but also addressing the lack of skilled labour in the construction industry. The robot has been developed by the scaffolding manufacturer PERI in collaboration with researchers from Syddansk Universitet - University of Southern Denmark, the Belgian universities KU Leuven and UC Leuven-Limburg, RWTH Aachen University in Germany, and the Jozef Stefan Institute in Slovenia. - We are developing the robot to make the physically demanding scaffolding work on construction sites easier and safer. The close collaboration between humans, robots and machines addresses the shortage of skilled workers in a highly efficient and digital way, says Peter Rübel, Senior Business Development Manager at PERI. Genio is still a prototype, but it works impeccably in closed environments and was presented for the industry at the bauma trade fair in Munich in April. During the next couple of years, the research consortium will test it on realistic test construction sites. - Over the coming years, in close collaboration with our customers and research consortium, we aim to bring the prototype to market maturity, says Oliver Schilling, Scaffolding Automation Specialist at PERI. Here at SDU, SDU Center for Large Structure Production has been doing the work on the robot, led by Christian Schlette. And it is no easy task to develop a scaffolding robot, he says: - Scaffolding work usually takes place outdoors, so the robot must be able to operate in changing environments. It has to be very mobile and able to handle scaffolding components that are not necessarily identical and may have dents and scratches from years of use. - These are all characteristics that typically only humans are good at. What has now made it possible is technological advancement, but above all, the close collaboration between research teams across Europe, says Christian Schlette. - We could only achieve this thanks to all the close partners, each of whom is an expert in their own field. And thanks to PERI, who were open-minded and ready to develop something entirely new.
