Meet Elijah Lawson, an Actuarial Intern working with the Finance & Actuarial team. Why Martello Re? He wanted to explore the actuarial field, particularly the career opportunities that involved more mathematics and programming. When he found Martello Re’s summer internship program, it seemed like a great opportunity to support the Actuarial team’s modelling and data validation processes while gaining hands-on experience in data visualization and workflow automation. What does he do every day? Thus far, his summer projects have focused on data valuations, automation, and validation. He’s become especially experienced in automating assorted calculations like morbidity risk and flight risk and programming within actuarial models. What has he learned? “The great part of this internship is that everything I’ve wanted to learn, I’ve started to grasp,” he said. “For example, I can name our top annuities and what they do. I’ve learned how to program in R and a lot about the data sorting and assumptions processes. It’s been a great learning opportunity for me” What’s he studying and what does he do in his free time? Elijah is a rising junior at Clemson University, pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Mathematical Sciences with a minor in Computer Science. He has many creative interests to which he devotes his free time. He plays electric bass and cello and started a band with some friends. He also practices weight-lifting and has been exploring classic literature as part of his journey to becoming an avid reader. #MartelloRe #Intern #Actuarial #Reinsurance #Charlotte

Next up in our Intern Spotlight Series is Charles Petty, our one and only Investments Intern. Why Martello Re? Charles wanted to broaden his horizons and increase his exposure to the debt-bond markets when he was applying for internship programs, and his connections led him to Martello Re’s Investments, Growth & Partnerships team. “I was attracted to the team’s dynamic and the atypical internship experience that was sure to come from a relatively entrepreneurial reinsurance company,” he said. "I also wanted to see how I could add value to Martello Re’s daily operations as an individual.” What does he do every day? His main project has been database cleaning and management using SQL. He’s helped streamline daily data scrubbing processes and automate portfolio analysis, reducing the time that the team spends on this task and freeing them up for more analytical work. What has he learned? As part of the Investments team, Charles has gained a broader understanding of the importance of risk management in the portfolios as well as sourcing accurate data to drive actionable investment strategies. What’s he studying and what does he do in his free time? Charles is a rising junior at Colby College in Maine where he’s pursuing a degree in Economics with a concentration in Financial Markets. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time outdoors whether it’s leading a backpacking trip thorough the local trails or skiing. #MartelloRe #Intern #Investments #Reinsurance #Charlotte

Meet Sarthak Gupta, one of our Actuarial Interns working with the Finance & Actuarial Team. Why Martello Re? According to Sarthak, he was drawn to this internship experience with Martello Re because we could offer him the agile learning environment of a start-up company rather than standardized processes. He felt he could gain deeper insights into the reinsurance industry while he was growing his skills and sharpening his decision making, the company could also grow with him. What does he do every day? Now Sarthak is doing valuable work simplifying the mortality experience data scalers and creating a coding script that will make balancing the scalers even more efficient. What has he learned? More than that, he’s learned that a career in actuarial sciences is more than sitting behind a desk and crunching numbers. “We’re using technical and soft skills to find creative ways to make sense of complex data and treaties,” he said. What's he studying and what does he do in his free time? Sarthak is pursuing his Master of Actuarial Science at Georgia State University. Outside of work, he enjoys playing sports, especially pickleball, which has helped him stay active and connect with people. ____ This week, we're spotlighting our incredible summer interns ahead of Intern Day on July 31. #MartelloRe #Intern #Actuarial #Reinsurance #Charlotte
